Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Trail or road in the rain?

Supposed to rain today and I want to ride anyway. I have the image that riding my cross bike on Green Bay Trail (some gravel) in the rain is the thing, but want to make sure you agree. Do I worry about getting drivetrain mucked up? If so, road riding is probably better, though I'd prefer the trail today if ok. Have only had cross bike for a few months, so excuse my naïveté.

Advice based on experience, so advice on gear or how to do something is often good to seek out.
As for if one should ride in rain on a path or pavement...its a cross bike. Its purpose is to be used in all sorts of conditions that are less than clean.

Ive ridden the Green Bay trail many a time- its part stone and part pavement. Part of it was even side roads going thru Winnetka or Kenilworth or one of those idyllic enclaves.

Just clean your drivetrain after riding. Same as if you were to ride on a paved path along a river after rain...you get a dirty bike. clean it.

Do you have fenders? If it's raining I'll be on my allroad bike with fenders. No problems with road or gravel on 650bx42 tires.

Have you seen the way people look after cyclocross races? Anything worth doing is more fun in mud. Ride your bike and enjoy the mud. Just hose it off after.

Ride on the trainer inside. Riding in the rain is never fun.

I haven't melted yet. Being a year round commuter involves rain from time to time.

I have got caught in the rain on both road and mtb rides. The road rides were easily a distant memory but the Mtb rides were epic and I still recall where I was and who I was riding with. Fun times, filled with wet muddy trails and the impending shower in the backyard, lol (too messy to go inside)

I don't like riding our trails in the rain. Adds to the erosion which means more exposed tree roots. Your terrain may differ. I don't stop when I get caught in the rain, that happens here a lot. Just that I'll not start out to ride in the woods when it's raining.

Agreed if we were talking about singletrack MTB type trails. My assumption was that the OP was talking about gravel sections of paths, not trails through woods with roots and mud.

Well if it isn't going to mess up the trail, then let's get dirty.
