Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

My Cross-Fitness-Utility-Tourer bike build...

This thread documents my custom Cross-Fitness-Utility-Tourer bike build. The frame, pending availability, will be a Soma Wolverine, but most likely a Surly Straggler. I intend to use the bike for, well, a bit of everything. Let's get started.

Wheels
* Shimano XT 8000 hubs
* DT Swiss Competition spokes & nipples
* Alex TD17 622 rims

Cogset
Shimano XT 8000 11-42T

I can't wait. Are you looking at the black or glitter Straggler, if that's what you pick? The black Straggler with a VO LD style stem would look great. Good luck

I'd like a black frame, be it a Wolverine or Straggler. The chances of getting a black Wolverine are close to nil. Black Straggler.

The components will be a mix of XT 8000 and SLX 7000. MTB components and gear range on a CX frame. Oh, and it will have flat handlebars.

I had a Pacer and my brother still does. Surly's QC is excellent. Their choice of colors not so. Still the Straggler looks like a great frame. After checking around with some Straggler owners it seems like the funky dropouts weren't that bad. Most of the problems were from mechanically challenged owners.

Cassette, """Shimano XT 8000 11-42T""" Yeah baby ! Mine wears like Iron and the gear range Is perfect for my
Mtb. I'm just now getting strong enough to hold a decent cadence In 10th gear on the smoother sections of my dirt two tracks.. 11th is still for tail winds and down hills..

I really like the one bike do it all thing...

I don't get the problem. With a gear RD system, the axle is pushed all the way forward, and kept there in place by the containment screws on each drop out.

We've got daunting, relentless climbs here. The 11-42T job will be mated to a SLX 7000 26/36T crankset. 17 gear-inches clean at the low end. That's exactly how I want it. 17.

Yeah I'm In Florida, and my hills are holes, the Un-reclaimed Phosphate pits of Alafia and Balm Boyette.
Our Biggest climbs are basically getting back up out of the Two story drop In's that are just deep holes

Many Of us do the 1x thing because of that and these new 11 speed cassettes.

My 1x with the 32 T up front,,, my low end is I think 20 gear Inches on my 27.5" wheel bike.

I just cant spin anything lower anyways, not smoothly,, If I try I chop wood and flounder on the climbs.
Even In that gear I gotta stay seated,
To get out of the saddle and climb I can only go as low as about 25 gear Inches,,and be smooth,,

I'm just not a good high speed spinner, never was.

"daunting, relentless climbs" I wish I had a few just to see how well I do.

Me either but some folks just like to complain. Read the Straggler thread over at MTBReview.com

Gotta ask- what conditions will you typically ride on? Large gravel, small packed gravel, dirt, roads, paths and trails, etc etc?
Call me totally ignorant as to what constitutes alternate roads in Bali.

The range from smooth pavement, to broken up cement, asphalt paths; hardpack dirt, smooth gravel, volcanic ash.
