FWIW I did a gravel race last year on a fat bike with 4" wide tires. It wasn't bad at all. The sandy sections and sections with rocks the size of baseballs...I floated through better than the others...

had 3 threads going w more info relating to these tires (a little), 1 specifically about this $50 bike & this tire, another about cutting fenders, and a 3rd w a focus on fenders for wide tires specifically. wound up cutting the fronts for both bikes LOL. still thinking of moving the tires to the Trek FX 7.0 Alpha, but it has a higher top tube so I'd have to be more careful in the ruff stuff. you know, like when you get stalled in a steep climb & have to get off the saddle quick!

the 700x45 Riddlers on this bike's rims measure between 1 5/8" & 1 3/4"

they have a little more tooth than a file thread. I got them cuz I have 3 bikes and have no intention of using them on any pavement. strictly hard packed stone dust or gravel

Terrene has a new tire--the Honali--which might be worth checking out. I'm still waiting on my review samples, but they'll be offering 700x40 and 700x50 sizes with different casing options.

I really like the riddlers tread pattern. I bet that rolls smooth

yeah & the'ye not hard like the old tires. quite comfortable. been playing with pressures. their max is 55lbs. last weekend I pumped the the back 60 in my basement, them a smidge came out (when I removed my pump chuck) so I figure I had it right around 50-55 for my ride. I kept the front softer. didn't measure it but due to recent rides & adjustments I think it was between 27-35lbs which seems just right. I'm a smidge over 220lbs plus 10lb rear trunk, so I think that back tire should be where it is (for hard packed trails). it still deflects nicely making contact across the tread
the unpaved rail trails I've been riding sometimes have steep road crossings where I have to climb out of the saddle, use a low gear & lot's of torque. so far, they have had the grip I needed & didn't break free. I think that's where the side knobs come in to play (besides just turns), also because it's not a file type thread
