SRAM Rival 1x crankset with aftermarket ring

I have a SRAM rival 1x crankset that came with a 42 tooth ring. I wanted to go down to a 38 tooth and I ordered a Race Face narrow wide chainring as it was 25 to $30 cheaper than a SRAM. I put it on and the chain line was just terrible. It didn't shift right and I ended up putting the original ring back on and sending the Race Face ring back to the company I bought it from for a refund. It appears as if the SRAM chainring is curved towards the inside a few millimeters or offset towards the inside I should say. I was on the phone with SRAM technical support but they didn't seem to know a bunch cuz they knew nothing about Race Face chainrings. Does anyone know if the chain line for this crankset is such that you have to use SRAM chainrings that are offset towards the inside in order to have a good chain line or are there other manufacturers that are making chainrings with an offset to work on this crankset? I am just curious is why I'm asking. I may want to go to a 36 or something in the future and SRAM does not go that small.

As far as I know, the only spider mount 1x chainrings with an offset built into the ring are SRAM. However, Wolf Tooth Components has a new system they call "CAMO" that replaces both the chainring and the spider and has spiders available in different offsets (the M2 is a "minus 2" offset that would be comparable to an SRAM 1x ring). CAMO is compatible with any of the removable-spider SRAM 1x cranksets (which means everything except Apex 1x). The CAMO chainrings are available in sizes down to 28t.

Ok thank you for verifying that I wasn't crazy lol. I basically wanted some confirmation if the SRAM chain ring indeed had offset built in. It sure looks like it does but sometimes looks are misleading. It is not a standard looking chain ring from behind. It definitely looks as if it "sweeps" inward from the spider to the tops of the teeth.

I had only ever used RACE FACE cranks and rings prior to purchasing this set and with all my Ride cranks you adjust chainline with the 2 mm spacers on the BB as the BB also fits a 73 shell. So to get the proper chainline on all my 1xs running Race Face cranks I have 1 spacer under the drive side and 2 under the non drive side. But the Rival BB fits no wider than a 68 shell so there is no BB adjustment for chainline. It must be built into the crank/ring combos.

Hi Trail Monkey,

We make the right offset rings for your SRAM Rival cranks. I've added the link here for your consideration.

Hope this helps,

some aftermarket rings are offset for chainline. You just have to shop around. I replaced my 105 5800 2x drivetrain with a 1x setup from Wolftooth using the same 105 crankset and the chainline is offset correctly with the ring in the "big" position. With these NW rings, you do get what you pay for.

The chainline is fine. no different than cross chaining on a big ring. A bit more noise in the the big cog but it shouldn't have issues shifting into any of the gears. Depending on where you spend the majority of your time on your cassette, you can mount the chainring on the inside or outside position.
