Ok, I am trying to visualize what Cyclocross is really like. From the pictures I see spread accross the web, it seems to be mainly a smooth off road event. Really I am just curious what percentage of the race is on paved roads, dirt path, and grass or whatever?

The percentage of varying terrain changes between each event. What makes cyclocross hard is the dismount - remount and the run ups, not to mention the fact that the races vary between 45 min and 1 hour. It's just shy if a sprint.

So do the rules require the use of a drop bar? I just do not see any other reason to use them in this type of conditions!

Nope - but if you use flat bars, bar ends cannot be used. I raced cross last year on a mountain bike with a rigid fork - I was at a disadvantage to the guys with cyclocross bikes.

Do you think the disadvantage was in the wheel size? With the industry view that 29 or 700 rolls over things easier.

No - I think the advantage is in the weight, frame size (cross bikes are easier to shoulder), tire size, riding position. I won and usally placed in the top 3 of most the cross races I did last year, all on a mountain bike - this year I've got a cross bike, but with only one gear, so I still have an excuse to lean on.
