Don't get defensive Tex. A lot of people look at racing this way. Some folks will get in their cars and burn a few hundred bucks and not mind. Once you get a family, bills and some responsiblities, a $175 purse (or even worse, prizes) doesn't make the trip worthwhile. What's the win, $50? That might cover gas money.

I like to race and have raced alot throughout 2006, including NC and Ga. cross races. I, and alot of other guys who race all year, will not drive 6 or more hours roundtrip, in the dead of winter, to race for $50, risking broken equipment or injury. Is $50 worth ruining an entire road season?

I hate to tell you, big purses lure big attendance...that's the way amateur racing has always been...

Its kool man, I just swung by here to let everyone know. If anyone took offense, it was you. How about this reply from you.......

"Hey sounds like fun. Dosent look like it pays enough money for me to come out. I live quite a bit away. Maybe if it had a little bigger purse, it may draw a little more attention. Still, should be a good day for racing".

But you had to throw in your manlyhood.

Its kool, your new here, just not a way to make alot of friends but whos to say your trying too right?

Have a good year.

And by the way, Im 33, I have 3 kids under 7, a wife that rolls in 20 minutes after me and I get home at 6pm. homework, bath, bed, Mortgage, cars, insurance, all that keeping up with Jones BS, girlscout cookies coming out of my $#%$, If your a family man, you know the drill.

My Original was to let my feloow NC'ers know there was a race nearby. You didnt have too crap everyone out just because you couldnt make it.

Hey C_heath. I've been doing the NC Winter Cup for the past 4 years and as you know it's all about the fun and most of the people who show up to these races are not in it for the money LOL. I wouldn't take up any kind of bicycle racing to expect a big pay off. Anyhoo. I am looking forward to doing the whole series and I would encourage anyone out there to come to these races they are great fun and where else are you going to get cyclocross in January.

Reminds me I need to get my license renewed. See you down there.

Headed down to Durham this Sunday hope you all can make it. Last weekend was a blast. The Saturday race was brutal. That long climb in the back section that led to the forced run up was one of the hardest cross obsticles I have ever seen. And the mud sloggy fields weren't easy to boot. That was my kind of race.

Yeah, the first race was rough with that hard climb/barriers at the top. Second race was nasty just for conditions. Durham was fun and fast. Looking forward to the last two races this coming weekend...

I had a real hard time in Durham. I wasn't feeling good in the morning and then started to feel a little better but I just kept going backwards. Guys that I beat the week before easily rode away from me. Bummer too because it was double points race and since I got 8th it booted me out of 3rd place Oh well.

That one hill run/ride up was killing me. The whole corse was dead flat except for that one damn hill. It really was a great obsticle as it tested your decision making whether to ride it or run it. I found running it to be much more difficult but faster where as riding it was a bit slow at the top but easier.

I also crashed in one of the corners and had to change bikes. I have no idea what happened except that all of a sudden I was on the ground about 5 feet ahead of my bike and lost the chase group I was in. Then on the next lap I say the root sticking out that took me down There was a lot of challenging cornering in that race which is really not my thing at all.

Looking forward to this week end. Then I am looking forward to a break It's been a great cross season.

jfmckenna-
Which category were you racing in?

Saturday this weekend was a beautiful, though a bit chilly, day. Very very windy, though! Sunday the weather wasn't great, but I really enjoyed the course. A little wet and slippery in places, and the two-log runup section that could be hopped and ridden really favored mountain bikers (thankfully, that's me!). Loved going over the humps on the BMX track, though I wish we could have gotten more of it in

^^ I race cat 2, so pro/1/2 or mens A.

Saturdays course was pretty good but not favorable for me. Too many turns
Also the gravel/grass transitions were killing me. I lost all my time in the corners in that race.

I couldn't make it out Sunday. It was already snowing and sleeting in Virginia so I decided to hang it up. I was looking forward to the last race too. I did that race last year and remember the bmx part of it that was really cool. Actually I only warmed up for that race last year since my stem broke on the first lap going up that go-cart ramp. Did they include that this year too?

Anyway My CX bikes are officially stored away in the basement till next year again. It's been a fun CX season but I have to admit I am tired and looking forward to getting out on the road a little more.

Not to be mean or anything or to be beating a dead horse but John Hamblen would probably win.....

^^ True. He always wins in fact he did win. The NC Races at least for me are always a race for top 5. I was lucky enough to get two 3rd place finishes because the attendance was low.
