good multi-use tires?

What are good tires I can ride on road 80% and firetrails 20%? Or is this asking too much of my tires, and best just to change tires before the weekend? Sometimes I ride on the road and on the same ride, might wander over some grass and trails.

What tires are you all using when your CX bike is not riding "offroad"? I'm wondering if 700x28 Ruffy Tuffy's are too slick. My trails aren't hardcore, just hard pack dirt, dry grass, typical SoCal desert type stuff.

I run some 700x35 kenda kwick roller Holiday. I mostly ride paved and dirt roads. I love 'em more than any knobby tire I've ever used. Plus, pavement just obliterates the knobs.

Oh, and they're folding bead so its not as much of a pain in the butt to mount them on thick cross rims.

I don't mind Ritchey speedmax 700x35 cross tires... fairly cheap (between 10-20$ a tire + tube) nice for pavement / firetrails. Very decent for cornering on pavement.

The Speedmaxes are a pretty good tire on road and dry dirt. I hate them for cross in the wet.

WTB All Terrainasauruses (All Terrainasauri?) are a good tire for pavement/dirt mix.
I have some in 26" on my commuter/beater and like 'em OK.
They make a Tour version that supposedly has kevlar puncture protection.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Lots of tires I never would've thought of trying.

I bought some Hutchinson acrobats (I think) from Nashbar, 10 bucks each. They seem to work pretty well on both single track and road. I run them about 65 psi.

They run smaller than their listed 700x37, more like 34mm wide.
