Looking to get in the loop
Everyone I know who does it says it's a blast, every race I've watched looks like a blast, riding trails on a mountian bike is a blast, so I'm going to do it.
I got a crazy idea to put a new cross fork onto my old '84 Trek CrMo bike along with a new groupset. Working at a bike shop, I can do everything for ~$250-$350.
The only possible problem that I would have is getting canti's on the rear. I've got no problem getting the studs, but I'm not sure how to get them onto the seat stays. Is there something I can buy that will allow me to clamp studs on? I saw something like that that T-Mobile was using at Paris-Roubaix in 2004, but can't find the picure anymore.
Another thing I have to ask; what would be better, cantilevers or Tektro direct pulls with after-market pads? The direct pulls work awesome on my MTB
So far, I've got everything but the group, fork and brakes...
Frame- '84 Trek lugged CrMo criterium frame
Fork- Whatever I can get in 1" threaded and canti studs
Wheels- Fulcrum Racing 5 Evo
Group- Shimano Tiagra or Campagnolo Mirage/Veloce
And everything else will be from the parts bin.
I think I'm going to run with a single chainring, I've got a 39 laying around but I think I'll be spinning too much, what're you running?

The only thing I know of is moots used to make Moots Mounts, which were clamp-on canti studs.
But you could probably get away with something like an Odyssey pitbull or pitbull 2 brake.

I have one I snagged on ebay just for this sort of possible future applications. It's supposed to be the best, most powerful center-mount brake there ever was. Or so I've heard.

Thanks guys, as soon as I get PayPal funds, I'll be getting one of those Pitbulls. Would there be any problem with the Fulcrum's? The rear is Radial/2x and the front is radial, but they're strong as can be.

a buy it now for about 30$ USD.
What are you looking for in clnchers? some nice knobbies? some for racing? some for firetrails? Cause if you are just putting together a fixie for 250-300 then stick with something cheaper like ritchey speedmax pros, they sell for about 10$ a tire and can go up to a 35c (so far as I've seen) and they are decent for firetrails with low mud and nice for cornering on city pavement. Thats my opinion tho.

I never seen the pitbulls before but what makes them interesting is that you can supposedly mount them just above the bb on the wishbone. would be different to see, but I wouldn't know what it would be like for taking a beating that low on the frame...

::EDIT:: I'm wondering if this would be USCF legal? Would it be smarter to get a Giant TCX on closeout and race on that instead with upgrades wheels?

At least that's the impression I've picked up. Someone can probably confirm it. Mountainbikes race at cross races, fixed gears with no rear brakes, I saw a guy on a redline 9-2-5 racing. I don't think there's any way you wouldn't be able to race.

Clamp on canti studs? I'm doubtful. Have you thought about trying a regular road brake in the back. You won't have all that much mud clearance and you might not be able to run the biggest size tire, but I'll bet it will fit. Some road brakes would be better than others - single pivot would be better than double, for example. Some of the older long-reach arms were downright bowed in their profile. I suspect your cro-mo frame has a fair amount of clearance between the chainstays in the back. The old trek aluminum's didn't have any. It would be a lot cheaper than getting what you're talking about.
