    Hybrid - Cyclocross Conversion

    I have an old Diamond Back Hybrid I'd like to convert to a cyclocross. I want to put drops on it to replace the straight bars. Putting drops on it means I need to replace the shifters and brake levers, right? Also, if I'm replacing the shifters/brake levers, should I put new derailleurs on? It currently has Deore LX components. Any thoughts would be appreciated. What about stem/head set?

    I believe the general thoughts is that you'll end up paying more in conversion than you would for an inexpensive or used cross bike. I know that's the problem I ran into before I bought my cross bike. Then again, projects are sometimes fun. I guess whatever gets you out riding the most is the best decision.

    You will need new brake levers. Unless you are willing to get creative with thumb shifters, you will need new shifters. LX components should play well with Shimano STI levers (or so says Sheldon), and if you want it to be super easy, use barcons.

    You may need a new stem, depending on clamp diameter (drop bars are usually 0.6mm bigger than flat or riser bars) and bike fit.

    I think you can probably get all of this done for $75, if you are patient and creative.

    I used to work at a LBS ten years ago (now out of business) and a customer brought in a Cannondale H400 hybrid which was converted to 'cross. It was very nicely done and had all the cool Ritchey components available at the time plus drop bars, bar-end shifters etc. I thought it was a factory 'cross bike but 'dale didn't make one at the time so the dude must have had several hundred dollars in it!.
