Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Any ideas on a 700c disc-compatible wheelset?

Any ideas on a 700c disc-compatible wheelset?

Hi all you cyclocrossers out there - I need you're help.

I'm building up a cyclocross frame as a winter commuting bike. I have a disc-compatible frame and cyclocross fork along with a set of Avid BB7 road disc brakes. These will be actuated by Cane Creek SCR 5's and a set of Cane Creek bar-top levers.

So far, so good... But now I need to purchase a road wheelset that that has the requisite disc-compatible hubs. Thus far I've managed to find a set of Cane Creek Strados Discs for about $300, and several combinations of "29'er" mountain bike wheels that might do the trick.

I don't need a "dual use" wheel that will work with rim brakes, as I'm fully commited to using discs on this project. Weight is a factor, but not all-important... Any ideas or personal recommendations that you might have are really appreciated!

Are you interested in only pre built?

Otherwise all of the shimano mountain bike hubs should work and be not too expensive.

Bontrager Select Disc Wheels - Available in 130 and 135 mm rear spacing
$279 but you could probably get them for less through a good local dealer.

Funny, I am doing the exact same build right now. Just got my wheels today in fact. My build is for commuting and wet weather training - while I dont want boat anchors, realistically you shouldn't be looking for superlight wheels - just something reasonable that will hold up well. You dont build up a disc brake bike to save weight I got these off ebay for $190 plus shipping, and they seem great so far but obviously I havent ridden them yet:

I should add, be careful on the rear spacing depending on your frame. Some frames are 130, some 132.5, some 135. My frame is 135 hence going with the mountain disc hubs to match.

132.5's in theory work both ways with road or mountain hubs. Also apart from a manufacturers 130mm hub the only 130's you can get for a wheel build are centerlock, bleck.

Yes, the 132.5's could work fine both ways - I just want to make sure the original poster double checked the issue since its something I nearly missed myself
There are 130 hubs that arent centerlock - Phil Wood makes a beauty but they run a mere $459

You could buy some XT hubs and respace it to 130

Deore hubs on Mavic A319 hubs would be perfect. Your bike shop could get/build them, or there is a vendor on ebay and online (already linked to) who might do similar. Shimano mtb hubs laced to good rims are a winning combo! And the A319 is very light for a trekking/touring rim. It's 200g lighter than the Vuelta Typhoon I have on the rear wheel and is better finished.

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my question thus far... The information has been really helpful!

BTW, I forgot to mention that the rear hub spacing in the frame is 135mm. I was aware of this, but I appreciate the heads-up... That seems to be a "gray area" with CX frame manufacturers - with both 130's and 135 models floating around out there.

I'll follow up on everyone's suggestions by doing a little shopping. When I complete my build I'll post a picture of the finished product for you all to see... It'll be a little unusual as it will have Dura-Ace bar-end shifters mounted in "thumbshifter" position using Paul's Thumbies... I may also decide to run a single 42-tooth chainring up front... I'm excited about it!!!

Thanks again for all of your help. The Bike Forums Cyclocross community has come through again!
