Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

K2 Enemy 22% off at REI

REI's fall gear sale is including the K2 Enemy (Tigra level cross bike) for 850 bucks, normally 1100. I've heard nothing about K2 bikes, but this seems like a really great deal. Does anyone have experience with this bike?

I test road one, it had 105, and it seemed like a nice bike.

I don't think I'd want the carbon seatpost for corss, but I have a ritchey one I'd swap from another bike and use the carbon post on that other bike (which will then be used soley for road). I think I'm going to head over to the REI outlet and see if I can get one ordered to test ride first.

Any idea how much it weighs?

Also, I'm unfamiliar with the "kalloy" stuff that is the stem/bars/seatpost.

EDIT: I see, I think it's the 2008 that has 105, whereas the 2007 (the one on sale at REI) had Tiagra.

Kalloy are a reputable Taiwanese manufacturer. Their own brand stuff is cheap and nice. The also make loads of OEM stuff.

Dunno. I'm looking at it because it would work for road and cross (so would most cross bikes, but there are certain things like deepish drop bars that would be good for the road that the K2 has stock). If off road is your priority I kight look at the Surly Cross Check in your budget. Heavy, not much of a racer, but good geometry for off road, as well as the ability to tae really wide tires if you're interested.

I placed my order for one today. I can barely aford it as is (digging into my savings) but it'll save wear on the other bike that I use for commuting. And honestly for 850 bucks it's a pretty good frame/component value. If I don't like it, REI has that wonderful return policy.

If you want the sale price, hurry though. It ends on the 14th.

And for recreational purposes you'll do well with Tiagra. Initially I was hoping to buy something 105 level, but financially that's not gonna hapen right now (yeah, the extra few hundred makes a big difference on a student budget). I plan on riding/racing the bike stock and upgrading to 105/ultegra as things wear out over the next couple years.

Now REI has it marked down another $50 to $799.99 (http://www.rei.com/product/730696). Jump for it now or wait for it to go lower?

Tough to say. They're obviously trying to clear out for the '08 models, so who knows how many they have left.

I've had mine for a few weeks now and like it a lot. The aluminum is surprisingly smooth, and it handles the way I wanted it to.

The nice thing about the compact sizing is it's easier to pick your size if you have to order it to the shop, though it's pretty easy to exchange, it being REI.

Kalloy

I have a Zette carbon seatpost, which I believe is Kalloy, on my road bike. It's been great, so much that I ordered the same thing with the Kalloy name for my next bike.
