Cross Check chain clearance problem...
I recently picked up a new Surly Cross Check frameset from my local shop. It's a 2007 model, size 54. The build is almost complete, but there is a big problem. The chain does nor clear a seatstay when on the smallest sprocket. I'm using 10sp road wheelset (campy record), and I know the axle and hub are spaced correctly. My smallest cog is 13T. It's not a slight rub either. It would probably jam if I tried to ride it (even on the small chainring). The axle is in the middle of the dropout, but even sliding it all the way forward does not produce enough clearance for the chain. I was under impression that Cross Check is 10sp-compatible. It appears to be a frame design issue rather than a manufacturing defect. Did anyone else run into this problem? Thanks!!!

wow, that sucks and is relevant to my interests. i've had a 9speed on there and it works fine, but was planning to switch to 10sp ultegra at some point.
i guess you could switch the axle for an mtb spaced one and add spacers on the drive side. but it sucks that you'd have to...

I just received a reply from Surly. They readily acknowledged the problem, and will ship me a new frame with re-designed dropouts. Apparently a 10-sp road hub with 13T small cog is the worst case scenario for this issue.

That's pretty awesome customer service. It never occurred to me that this would be a problem, and I wasn't planning on stepping up to 10-speed, but this is good to know.

perhaps it's a campy issue?? or maybe just a 13t cassette problem? my friend just built up a crosscheck with ultegra 10, a 12-27 cassette, a 10 speed 105 hub, and has had no issues. he ordered it from qbp this summer, but i'm not sure if that would be the newer dropout design or not.

Perhaps he is using newer dropouts. I took a very good look at it last night, and to get enough clearance I would probably have to use 11T small cog and slide the axle all the way forward, which is a suboptimal position for rear derailleur relative to the location of the hanger. The seatstay is rather thick on both sides of the dropout braze joint. I bet the solution is to move some or most of the seatstay joint to the outside of the dropout. I'm very happy Surly is taking care of it!!!
