Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

**Portland** BF Cross Forum Ride

What's up Portland People!

Let's cross the digital divide and go riding. I got some new stuff for my bike and everyone seems to think that all I do is take pictures of my bike vs riding it. I gotta show you guys what I am made of.

I'm thinking next Saturday morning (Dec 15) or possibly Sunday?

At any rate, I'd like to get a feel for interest in a group ride. I think we should meet in the West Hills (say, Skyline Burger parking lot) and ride down to the Springville road trailhead and traverse the Leif Ericsson trail in Forest Park. Newbs welcome - I know these roads well. 20-25 miles? No one gets dropped.

Let me know if you are down.

Dabbo? DinoShepard? PDXJeff? i_r_beej?

I'm in.

May I humbly suggest we meet in NW instead of on the hill?

Oh man... this is close. I'm hoping to drive back from Missoula on Friday, but we might get delayed until Saturday. Sunday I could almost certainly make.

I'll also have to see if there's room for me to lug my cross bike back, otherwise I'll bring the touring bike (bringing that back to sell anyways).

And MIN... I figured you'd be determined to drop us after all that talk of you just dressing up your bike and not riding.

There are plenty of group rides, just not for this particular group. Actually, I don't know of any cross "rides," but there are a lot of organized practices.

Sounds fun MIN, but I can't make it this time. I work Saturdays, and the parents come on Sunday for the holidays.
Maybe another ride on Xmas eve, or New Years day...or maybe some regular monthly rides in '08.

MIN, I'm sure you could detect some jealousy in my posts. That Poprad is sweet. (and oh so clean)

Speaking of which, who are the cross dudes who met at the Ugly Mug in Sellwood? I hooked up with them once on my MTB before cross season and it was a good ride.

Anyone have any contact info?

Ugly Mug group rides are at 8:00am on Sunday mornings. I think that they are informal "no one dropped" road rides open to everyone.

Check with Sellwood Cycle Repair. They might have an idea who the 'cross group was that met at the Ugly mug. This late in the season 'cross specific rides will be rare.

Hey MIN-- I'm definitely interested! I think I can swing a Saturday AM ride. (Sundays are out) Let me check my schedule-- this time of year things start getting a little sketchy. Early would be good. (I know I've got a social obligation later Saturday... just not sure when exactly. I'd need to talk with the Cruise Director.)

What did you have in mind, time-wise?

Sadly my Poprad is in the repair stand. The USGP b0rked my left shifter. I'd be riding my MTB with the Midge drop-bar. (Almost as good as a CX bike... not really!)

I come from SW near Lake Oswego-- maybe I could meet you at the intersection of Leif Erickson and Springville? Um... might not work.

Drop me a line at brian.p.johnson@gmail.freakinhatespam.com.

Brian -

I am in West Linn, we can carpool if you like.

I still think we should try to meet in NW. I hear there's one or two coffee place there. Besides, I will need pizza/beer afterward anyway.

Saturday is good for me.

Equipment wise, my bike is still in pieces, let's see how ups does for me. Otherwise I will be on the MTB as well.

I'd just like to put a vote in for Northwest as well, though I'm still not sure if I can make it Saturday. I'll try and get in touch with the girl I'm riding with tonight an see if she's still planning on heading out early Friday.

My bike isn't in pieces but I am waiting on a new derailleur hanger. Hopefully it'll be here in time.

Hmmm...

Not sure if this bike is going to come together for the weekend. The plan was to use an old XTR crankset I had laying around.

Mounted it up and it is way too outboard. Chainline is very bad. I didn't take into account that the crankset is designed around a 135 rear space and this frame is 130. I am not sure if a narrower bottom bracket will solve this isssue, but for now I am going to sleep on it and get back to it in the AM.

Portland BF Cross ride

Saturday would work for me. Let me know time and Place. NW meet sounds good. USGP 5 broke off my derailleur on lap 1.2! Luckily, I have a Kona Pit bike to ride.

OK, the bike is back on track. I ordered a new crankset.

However, I was just advised by the bride that Saturday AM is not so bueno. Long story, but I am trying t make it better. I will let you all know by tomorrow.

Leif Erickson Ride

Thanks to Min for the great early AM ride. The weather started dicey, but turned into a cool beautiful ride. I actually over dressed and got a bit warm. I had never been up Saltzman and was thankful to have a guide up to Skyline. That's one over the top Poprad!
