New Surly has arrived

My new Surly Cross-Check has arrived. I was hoping to pick it up early this afternoon and enjoy the unseasonably pleasant Illinois weather. It took longer than I thought it would to put it together, but thats OK, the shop did a great job (Performance Bicycle in Naperville). Porn to follow.

I only got to ride a few miles tonight, but it feels great.

One of the items I had added was the Cateye Astrale with cadence. Is there a way to set the display to cycle through functions automatically ie: trip distance, total odometer, elapsed time, average speed , cadence etc?

Congrats! I got my Surly a month ago and I really enjoy it. What color did you choose? Did you make any spec. changes aside from adding the computer?

Thanks for asking. I had the coice of black or red on this so I decided to go with the red one.
I am trying to come up with a name for this bike, Shirley seems like a shoe in but a bit obvious.

It is set up with 105 components, it is a triple. I wanted 36 spoke wheels, but the shop set up the front hub with an ultegra 32.

spd 520 pedals.

Looking forward to chasing rabbits with it.

Funny... returning from my ride this evening you should have seen the bunnies scatter. Bumper crop this year...

You'll enjoy your new ride. 36 spokes? you must plan on doing some touring. A typical 3X-32 set-up will hold up just fine.

I wanted the 36 spoke setup because I'm a heavy duty kind of guy.....240-250 lbs.
This is my first bike with sti shifters so I'm getting used to them. I haven't had a bike with drop bars for 20 years, and even then, I only road on the tops. I'm trying to find several comfortable hand positions. The 700x30 tires may seem huge to roadies but I haven't had anything that skinny under me since I dated an anorexic.

I did my first 12 mile ride on it this morning. The Gilman Trail (pretty much all black top) was covered with fallen leaves. Being wary of slippery wet leaves, I paid much attention to traction.

The bike handles well. I noticed a bit of squirrlyness on curves, the rear wheel seemed to want to move a little further out than I anticipated. The action in the rear reminded me of the rear suspension on my 91 BMW on slippery days.

I'd like to see some photos of your new rig if you can post them...
