single or dual rings up front, some questions for the experts
Hey all,
what do most of you run up front, single or dual rings?
what gear combinations for different courses? is there a sort of standard range, like a range that no normal person would ever stray from?
i come from a mountain background, but i am really interested in cx, seeing as its all around me here. i want to learn!
thanks for the help

single or double ring comes from experience on what works for you. I think single rings run 42t. Double usually run 38/46 or 48.
Rear varies but I think most run 12-27.

I think RacerX pretty much covered it. I use a 38/48 combination, works well for me. I could see using a single if you only used the bike to race, but I ride trails on my bike as well so appreciate the flexibility.

I just went from a 13-26 on the rear to a 11-28. Made a big difference in how I felt on Sunday's race. Less wiped out, and could push through the tops of the hills without blowing.
48-38 on the front.

I roll on a 42t up front and a 12-25 in the rear. Experience has taught me that if I cant ride up it in my 25, it is faster to shoulder the bike and run.

i use a double, 38/48, with a 13-26 on the rear. it works for me. i've never really had shifting problems in the mud but, then, on muddy courses, you don't usually get out of the small ring except for the start.
