I like the additional comfort of a steel frame.
Aesthetically speaking, I think the brakes are cooler.
I get a sick sense of pleasure when I keep up with road bike friends on slicks while I have knobbys.
Lastly, I hope to build the fitness to race someday.

I have a Poprad that usually gets the nod for daily riding over a Tarmac SL, a De Rosa Idol, and a Moots YBB.
Why? Because it's so damn FUN! Nothing beats skinny tires on dirt, IMHO. Fire roads and MTB lite are just a kick on this thing. As an ex-road racer, the lustre of the everyday training ride on road has worn off after 30 years, mountain biking was never my style, especially with a full susp boinger, so the CX bike (hybrid, 'cause I'm not racing) slots in perfectly as a fun trainer. Besides, it's fun to get looks from both roadies and MTBers alike who can't believe I am riding with them on THAT thing. It's even more fun when I have to wait for them to catch up.

I ride a cross bike without racing because for me it makes a better road bike than most road bikes, which are really criterium racing bikes. I want tires fatter than 23mm, fenders, etc. And I ride it because cross bikes are just darn cool.
Lately, it seems the versatile road bike picture is improving. Bikes like the Salsa Casseroll make for a pretty good all rounder, and hopefully more manufacturers will take advantage of long reach brakes to make more versatile road machines. That doesn't mean I'm giving up my Crosshairs, though.
