I got caught in the rain on my poprad disc for the first time this past weekend. It was pouring pretty hard and when I got home I dried off the bike and parked it inside. Today when I hung it up at work by the front wheel I noticed some rusty water drip out from the hole where the chain stay meets the seat stay. I know it's a steel bike and all, but I'm a bit surprised. I'm glad I hung it, otherwise who knows how long this water would have stayed in there.

I'm looking into getting some rust treatment for the inside, but is this a common problem for poprad to have crappy draining? There doesn't seem to be any drainage around the BB at all. I figure you CX racers have to deal with water/mud a fair amount... is it good practice to turn the bike up to let the BB area drain out after a wet ride? Thanks for any help.

I always remove the post and leave it upside down after a rainy ride.

I dry the bike off with a towel and make sure I dry and relube the chain almost immediately.

I'll definitely start doing the same, thanks. Did you treat yours with frame saver or something similar? I keep in indoors, so I'm wondering if I'm smarter about helping it drain do I need to bother with the treatment.

Every good steel bike deserves FrameSaver or similar.

Treating the frame, as mentioned, is very important. Try to coat the insides of every tube, grease the inside of the BB and head tube. Relube the frame every once in a while.

You should be able to drain the BB by pulling the seat post and flipping the bike over, or, if the Poprad has a plastic cable guide on the bottom of the BB, you should be able to pull the screw out of that.

I was thinking about drilling a drain hole in my BB shell on my poprad. Not that it gets too wet here but just in case.

While I think it's a reasonable and inexpensive precaution to use framesaver, the dangers of rusting out a steel bike that is stored inside are minimal. Most frames have drain holes near the rear dropouts, as you've found. After riding in the rain or cleaning the bike, just let it drain by lifting up the front wheel. That's how I store my bike, in any event.

Yeah I didn't treat my frame either: I just shake out excess water and hang upside down without the post. I will certainly crash or replace the frame before rust does structural damage.

If you live somewhere it rains, and even if you do keep your bike inside a frame can still rust out. I lost a wonderful Peugeot 753 Pro to rust. If I had know about rust saver I would have used it and saved the bike.

Apply frame saver to any steel bike, end of story. There's no reason not to.
