Motobecane Fantom Cross Disc

Hello, this post is mostly directed to Bikesdirect, but anyone else with info can chime in. I've seen some talk about a new Motobecane cross with disc brakes back in April mostly and when I emailed Bikesdirect about availability, price, etc., they said I should ask in this forum as they weren't allowed to talk about them. Anybody know anything?

Hi
and thanks for asking

The Fantom Cross Outlaw is going to be spec'd like the Fantom Cross except with new Vuelta Cross Pro for disc wheels and Avid BB5 disc brakes. Frame & fork are of course setup for disc. The Motobecane Cross Outlaw is due in about 6 to 8 weeks. about $895

There is a new Motobecane Fantom CX UNO - 4130 crm-moly CX bike in single speed - very exciting I think; as there are not many like this. about $450

Fantom Cross Team Ti is really getting a lot of attention too. It will be in about Mid September. Titanium frame with traditional setup - super nice CF fork - both frame & fork have disc tabs. This entire bike will be under $2000 - and the frame&fork are easily equal to other Ti CX frames that sell for over $2200 on frame alone.

We are increasing our orders for the CX season by a huge amount; we believe in CX bikes as a great option for many riders.

Thanks for the update. Any news on the 853 steel CX bikes I read about?

Yes
that project is on hold
drop in dollar vs pound€ plus insane increase in steel as a commodity
has put 853 too close to Ti in price

we like steel; but if too close in price to Ti - it is going to be hard to sell the 853

So we are reworking steel project to be more like a cross check - with 4130 crm-moly

I would say in about 4 to 6 weeks
getting all stuff out of factories is harder this year due to insane increase in demand for bikes
worldwide increase in gas prices has everyone fighting to get more bikes

the frame and fork are going to be real nice on the UNO
and on balance it will be an exceptional value at $450

colors are BLACK with silver decals
and White with silver decals

we think it will sell out at once

I am going to get myself a white one!

Will it be sold as a frameset, or complete?

The Outlaw would be a better sell if it had BB7 instead.

The disc tab is such a waste, why bother if you have the spacing at 130mm anyway.

I have BB5s on both of my commuter rigs (roadie-fried MTBs) and my true MTB, and they are more than adequate. I suspect that speccing BB5s is part of what allows BD to offer this bike at a price like this.

Will BD be moving its frames to BB30 bottom brackets?

We stock CX wheelsets in 130mm with disc hubs
and so disc can be mount no problem if tabs are present

Thanks for the info, Bike Direct. Any chance that you will carry a disc model in the "Fantom Cross Pro" level; with Ultegra and all that stuff? Thanks

BB5s are essentially identical to BB7s, but slightly harder to adjust. Stopping power is identical between the two, assuming correct setup.

The uno is very tempting. I've been wanting a singlespeed for winter, and maybe racing if I'm feeling masochistic.

Make it 132.5mm, it will accept both 130mm and 135mm spacing. You can make everybody happy. With 130mm spacing, you will lose potential buyers looking to use their disc (brake) wheelsets with this frame.

That and the brake pads are different. BB5 brake pads are round. Not compatible with BB7 and Juicy pads, which are easily available. BB5 Road is OEM only. That's why he is putting it on the bike.

I absolutely agree on both points. Am I going to ditch my $700 Spinergy Disc wheels because they have 135mm spacing? Or the guy on here who has the Chris King ISO disc hubs/Zip carbon rims at 135mm spacing? Disc = 135mm, otherwise the tabs are just weight. Especially considering the dish required by the disc hubs!

BB7's are like $10 more than BB5's wholesale. Come on!

Where on your website do you find these wheels? I looked and did not find any parts or accessories.

Wheels are sold by bikeisland
which is our part, wheels, and frame division

I think he has CX disc wheels in stock now
if he sold out; more will be coming soon

Disc Brakes + Road geometry + Drop bars = happy me, sad wallet. It sucks to be poor.

Will the 2009 Fantom CX have the disc brake hangar?

If Bikesdirect did a bike with a triple chainring and something close to a 1:1 gear ratio I'd be all over it in a heartbeat.

Mmmmm...Ti CX with disc tabs. Drool, drool, drool. I understand those who complain, but I'm for it. But, options for a 130 spaced disc rear is going to be slim pickin's. Why not 135? Or 132.5?
