    Pedal Redux: Frog ATAC Eggbeaters or Look?

    OK, I'm newly registered on the forum but have been reading/riding for years and mostly I race. I already have experience with two of the pedals in the title. I'm seeking some current opinions on these pedals that does not appear to have been discussed clearly, particularly around power transfer. I'm sure there's some better insight out there. Basically, I am dissatisfied with the unstable platform of my Frogs, especially compared to the stability and power transfer I get from my road pedals. I'm not talking about float i.e. horizontal rotation, I'm talking about stepping in the pedal and being able to roll the foot left or right, i.e. vertical rotation.

    The short question is, are my Frog cleats just worn? Will new cleats have less play while pedaling? Or, is this just characteristic of Frogs and will I find better satisfaction by moving to Eggbeaters, Looks or Other, or returning to ATACs?

    Here's what I really want:
    A CX and MTB racing pedal that exits without fail, has consistent and reliable entry, but that feels stable and solid while grinding away. i.e. I want great power transfer. This pedal is for racing first, not touring.

    Here's what I know:
    I'm currently using Frogs for my MTB and Cross bikes after the encouragement of a friend a few years back. These are mounted on Carnac shoes. I rode ATACs prior to that but never paid attention to stability and power transfer. I do like the effortless exit of the Frogs, I don't like how unstable I feel when clipped in - I feel like I'm riding on a loose ball joint, especially compared to a road pedal. Also, when I transfer all my power I can sense the pressure of the Frog cleat in my feet, which isn't very comfortable.

    Should I:
    A) Replace my Frog cleats more often
    B) Switch shoes
    C) Face it LeFranc, the most reliable, consistent CX/MTB pedal for stability and power transfer is _____
    D) Both B and A
    E) Both B and C

    i ride speedplay zero on the road and have found that crank bros. candys work best for me in the dirt and result in a very stable platform. i always hated SPDs because it felt like i was pedaling on the head of a nail.

    I've got Frogs and have used them for nearly 15 years I think. The newer pair I have has recently gotten a bit of that roll but it is in the pedal body and not the cleat. It had been about a year since last time regreasing this pair so did that the other month, looseness is still there so ordered up a bearing kit for them. I suppose that sounds like a negative review for the pedals, but these ones are ~5 years old and ridden year round daily. The last few years mainly on the fixed gear commuter in all weather.

    Then again, I've sorta wondered if I'm just sticking with them because that's what I'm used to.

    ATAC. i rode Frogs briefly, but didn't like the lack of an audible clip-in, which i believe is important in cross. also, some people are a fan of the way Frog's float feels, i am not.

    ATAC also has great cleat and bearing life.

    Also, what kind of shoes do you have?
    I have a personal MPG of 100. That is per gallon of cytomax.

    Stick with the frogs.
    If it looks like the $3000 bikes but costs less than a decent helmet, it probably isn't a wise investment.
