Fantom Cross Uno Question
The only thing holding me back from purchasing this bike are the cross levers. How much would it cost to convert them to more traditional hoods? Could I just buy the levers, or would I need longer brake lines, and bar tape as well?
Are there any other viable singlespeed options in the $400-450 price range?

The kilo TT is even cheaper
but if your in that range get the Uno and buy some cheap levers and bar tape from nashbar and new cables, if the old ones don't work. You will still be under that 450 price.

Converting the levers isn't that hard. Buy some good hoods and some good tape, take the tape off yourself, take the bar top levers off yourself, and then have you LBS swap them for you. You'll pay about $15 to $25 for the labor, and probably about $50 for the parts. Piece of cake.
OR,
if you want to be fancy, wire them up with both bar tops and drop levers, so you have that extra flexibility and control for your dismounts....

Based on the pics of the Uno I've seen, you'll need new cables and housing too since they were cut shorter to accommodate the bar top levers . Cane Creek brake levers can be found for about $30, brake cables and housing for about $15-20. You'll need cable cutters ($15 to $50) and maybe need to replace the bar tape ($5+) if it has adhesive backing.
I haven't seen any other new bike at that price point.

You can get this for $40 shipped, and even sell the calipers to make a little scratch back for yourself.

I installed Cane Creek Levers along with the top bar levers on my Uno.
It was very easy - and I have never done this type of thing before.
You will require 1 section of cable housing to complete the job along with the provided cable housings.
I was able to snag the cable housing off a junk bike i have laying around for that specific reason - to use parts off it as needed.
I have never run top bar levers before - and i kinda dig them. The jury is still out tho - as I might take them off. I told myself to run em for 6 months then decide.
you will need to replace the tape. I love FIZIK tape myself. I also would suggest the FIZIK gel under the tape to help your wrists from all the trauma of riding trail.
