Anyone Riding a 60cm or 62cm Surly Cross Check?
Greetings. I am ordering a Surly Cross Check and can't decide to go with the 60cm or 62cm. None of my LBS's have either size in. I am 6'2 with a 34 inch inseam. Just seeing what others are riding out there. If you ride a 60cm or a 62cm, can you tell me how tall you are and what your pants in seam is? This will help me know what size to order....
Thanks!
Thanks!

Is that your pants inseam or true inseam? I'm just shy of 6' and my cycling inseam is almost 34.
FWIW, I ride a 56 CC and it's a great fit.

That is my pants inseam, how do I figure my "cycling" inseam? Also, how do I find the standover height of a Cross Check?

I'm 6'4" with a PBH of 35.5" and I went with a 60cm CC. You can find the standover specs here.. IMO the 62 would be a bit big for ya - it's a monster!

Stand with your back against a wall, and your feet 6" apart. Hold a book up into your crotch until it's tight up against the bone. Measure from the top of the book to the floor.

Do you have any pictures of your bike setup? I'm about your size (6'3", 36" PBH), and I'm debating between the 60 and 62 as well. One issue I have with the 60cm frame is the head tube is so short... that would leave me with a lot of spacers showing to get the bars where I want them.
Thanks,
Eric

I don't have any pics right now - I'll see what I can do. The 62 is really long in the top tube which is what turned me to the 60 when I test rode both at my lbs. I would have had to put a much shorter stem on it than the 120mm they both come with.

A lot would depend on how stretched out you like to be. I like and need to be stretched out when I ride, because of a bad knee.
I am 6', 33" inseam, and ride a 61cm 2008 Specialized Crosstrail. The new Crosstrails TT isn't as vertical as the 2008. I'm glad I bought the one I did. Everything says it's too big - but, it's perfect for me. Standover gives me about 1" of clearance. MAX, in bicycle shorts, and shoes.

Size it by the top tube, and ideally have a 100-120 stem.
I bought a Gunnar Crosshairs over a Crosscheck precisely because of their short head tubes. I'm 6'-2", with long arms, and the 60cm fits me perfectly. With a 59cm top tube, 110mm -10° stem, 2cm of spacers I have 3" of saddle to bar drop. If I want to do some more technical singletrack, I flip up the stem which gives me 1" of drop.

I'm riding a Soma Double Cross in a 60cm size. Ita has an effective top tube length of 60cm, like the Surly in the same size. It does have a taller Headtube of 195mm v 160mm. I really like the fit of the bike, I'm 6' even.

I can tell you that the top tube on the 56cm crosscheck has a 57cm top tube. So does my 59.5cm c-t-c road bike. In other words, though I ride a 59cm road bike, I'd buy the 56cm crosscheck and might even buy the 54. I road a 56 the other day and it was great but the 54 would be my choice if I was going to be doing a lot of offroad riding on it. I'm 6'0" with an 85cm pbh ("inseam").

Surly measures to top of *top* tube.
Soma measures to top of *seat* tube.
So for any advertised size, the Surly will always larger than the Soma.

I am 6'0.5" with a 34" inseam (measured in stocking feet with book in my crotch.) and I went with a 56cm for cross as sizing bikes by top tube is usually the best way to go and I usually ride 58cm top so a 57cm is the way to go for my cross sizing.
I like the overall ride of the bike, but let me list some of the things I dont like.
Short head tube. I am using ~2" of spacers and it looks a little ridiculous and also makes for some noticeable flex when using the front brake.
not right spacing and semi horizontal drop outs: these make the rear wheel (130mm spacing) hard to get in and adjust even with the screws for adjusting wheelbase.
terrible rear brake hanger exacerbated by the surly collar. weakens braking and makes pulling the housing a pain. I am machining a work around, but this is a ridiculous overlook for a 400 frame and fork that is marketed as a cross bike.
Weight: if you are shouldering the bike you are really going to notice the additional pounds compared to something like a redline conquest pro.
With all that said, I bought the Surly as I was unsure if I would like cross and in case I didnt I wanted a versatile bike I could do something else with. Now that I love cross racing I am looking to get something easier to shoulder.
Good luck with whatever bike you get and try and get a fit done before opening those purse strings.

I have a 60cm crosscheck. I'm 6'1" with a 34.75" inseam. A 58 would probably fit me better. Or my 60cm might fit me better if I were an inch taller, like you.
In other words, a 60cm might fit you best.

True, BUT;
The Soma has a sloped top tube; the Surly has a horizontal top tube. The effective length of the seat tube & top tube is identical for these models. That's what matters.

I am 6'4" with a 34" inseam. I have owned a couple of 62cm cross checks and a 62cm LHT. Both felt a little small to me. I now ride a 66cm Rivendell. The 62cm cross check was a perfect size for me if I used it strickly for cross racing or shorter rides.

Is it safe to assume that unless otherwise specified people are giving the CT length? Is this the most common way to measure a bicycle?
