    Head 2 Head

    I am seriously considering a CX bike to commute on and for go almost any where fun. Some seem to allow the addition of fenders which is a plus. The two that I am pitting "Head To Head" are the Trek XO 1; http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/xo/xo1/ and Giant TCX 1; http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/...ad/2299/32183/. They seem to be specked similarly, but I have no idea what subtle things to look for. Which IYO which is the better choice?

    Don't know if you're planning on using a rack when commuting but neither bike has braze-ons so attaching a rack could be tricky. That will also limit the type/style fender you can install.
    I bought a cross bike for commuting in 2005. Many commuters ride cross bikes. Have you asked the folks in the Commuting forum?

    I did just notice the fender braze on deficiencies. I can get by without a rack as I always have a back pack with me and travel as light as possible.
    Have you asked the folks in the Commuting forum?
    I have posted some inquiries there as well. Now I have to research what are the most solid/durable fenders I can attach. I am leaning toward the Giant. Close specks and lower price.

    well, given the lack of braze-ons, that kind of limits the use of SKS fenders (the eyelet-loops require braze-ons); you could run Honjos or VO fenders, but the RD cable on the seat stay would get in the way of the fender-stay clamp, though maybe it's not insurmountable.

    if you're going to commute, you may as well get a bike that's better suited for it; there are several CX frames that make top-notch commuters, for about the same price, and almost certainly better components if you built it up yourself from a frame.

    For that price you could get a Tricross Comp that has braze on gallore. Rack mounts both front and rear, fender mounts and a third water bottle mount. Better suited in my opinion.

    Better suited in my opinion.
    I agree. I'm not thrilled with the down speck in components compared to the TCX 1 though.

    Down spec? You must be looking at the Sport model. The Comp model is a step up from the TCX1. Ultegra/105 mix, verses straight 105, plus carbon seat stays.

    The Comp model is a step up from the TCX1.
    Very nice bike. I can't afford the additional $1100 it would cost me.

    Granted if you purchased new it's about $800 more and you're not getting THAT much of a nicer bike. I think the TCX1 is more bang for your buck. Problem with this bike is the lack of mounting points. Maybe look for a last years Comp. I got mine for $900 although it was used.

    Of the two, I'd go Giant, mainly because of the Trek's lower spoke count wheels, which may not stand up as well to the rigors of daily commuting. The Giant's brakes are miles better as well.
