Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Help me find a cyclocross frame/bike

I'm trying to find a moderately inexpensive cyclocross frame or complete bike. I'm looking for the following:
Steel frame and fork
single speed
road geometry
Disc only
preferably with rack and fender mounts

I know this is a tall order, but is anything like this available in the $500-$700 range? I was considering the Motobecane Fantom Cross Uno, but I would really prefer disc brakes. I need to have something versatile(due to finances) that can pull duty as racer, commuter, tourer and winter bike. I am interested in new 2009 models or anything older/used as well.

You wouldn't be able to build up the whole thing for $700, but the Surly Karate Monkey frame could be a good starting point for what you have in mind. It's not exactly road geometry, but it will do everything else you want.

I checked out the Karate monkey, unfortunately from the website:

"BRAZE ONS:
KM has cable stops and hydro housing guides. Also single eyelets at drops for fenders or rack.
IMPORTANT: if using disc brakes, you will not be able to use these eyelets, and so need to use clip on fenders and/or a seat post mounted rack"

Check out Soma DoubleCross DC:

https://www.somafab.com/dcdc.html

Best price I've seen:

https://www.bikemania.biz/Soma_DC_Dou...ssframe_dc.htm

Beware that Bikemania does not maintain stock; They have everything drop shipped.
I just bought a Soma DoubleCross non-DC frame from them a couple months ago.

I could probably manage the Soma DC and an eccentric BB or Hub and the rest from parts I have lying around, or if I want to go cheap, I might do the fantom cross uno and put the brazing skills I have been developing to the test with some disc mounts unless anyone else has an idea?

Salsa La Cruz....
https://salsacycles.com/laCruz08.html

You can use P-clamps for racks/fenders....

I've heard the Soma cross bikes have a history of cracking and I had a Soma Smoothie ES that had a crack on the bottom of the downtube/headtube joint...
Just my experiance

Its a little more than your looking to spend but the gunnar fastlane would be a perfect fit for what your asking. I just ordered a gunnar crosshairs and they have been one of the easiest companies ive had to deal with in a long time. Gunnar bikes are basically stock geometry waterfords so you know the quality is there.
