Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

calling all cyclocrossers

hello all, just wondering how many of you guys/girls ride single speed or fixed gear when riding on cx courses. i have been thinking of doing this lately and have heard a little about it here and there, i just wanted to get some opinions. I enjoy a challenge and i think adding ss or fg to the element would take this to a whole new level.

-thanks

I am surprised no one has spoken up on this...
I think a lot of people do this. I have had the pants whupped off of me by an unassuming looking dude in cut offs with a hippie bead who was riding a 1970's POS road bike with knobbies as a single speed.
Several cx models are are single speed as spec'd by the manufacturer. I know a lot of folks around here ride those.

I don't... yet. As soon as I can get a couple of bucks under my belt, though, I'm pulling the trigger on the Motobecane Fantom Cross Uno. My Poprad does too much road duty to convert to SS or FG.

Search the cyclocross forum on roadbikereview, https://forums.roadbikereview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=47. There's a lot of information on racing singlespeed.

i did a cross race last season on my track bike... i got killed on the corners with my slicks but I did well on the straights and barriers. flying dismounts on fixed gear is fun times.

I just put together a 80's Bridgestone 400 with center pulls as a SS CX to play around with for spring and summer. I doubt I'll race it but maybe.

I did a few races on my group buy rob roy this last season. Lots o fun and pain. There really wasn't anything I couldn't ride that the geared bikes could except for this big sand pit, which might have had more to do with me just sucking than anything else, but I think I'd run sand pits anyway just to keep the sand outta my drivetrain.

I don't think I would if I had the chance. The races near me have too many straight flat sections that quickly play into the hands of those with gears. A solid 3-speed would be pretty killer though.

I have a singlespeed/fixed CX bike built but didn't get a chance to make the jump into racing last season.

did only one race on a Single Speed... had it geared right for me, so that i didnt feel like i was losing to much by not shifting... having less to get messed up by all the mud was a decent advantage... and its a cheap way to have a lightweight bike. my single speed build is coming apart giving parts back to other things... but one day ill build another one.
