Howdy all! I've seen two bikes at the Performance site I thought were interesting.

The Mongoose Croix Elite sports a Rival groupset and comes in at $1299. The Mongoose Croix Comp has a Tiagra groupset (though a 2200 fd, which surprised me). Both state that the frames have disc tabs. While it won't matter right now I will want disc brakes by next winter. I'm in Northeast Ohio and the snow/ice/slush is pretty rough.

Anyone have any experience with Mongoose road bikes or cyclocross bikes? I've never seen these two at either of my local shops. I wonder if I could have them order it and assemble it. The Croix Comp is quite cheap, though I'd probably want to replace the front derailleur. It's similarly spec'ed to the Redline Conquest, which would cost me $1200 locally.

Anyone have any feedback or warnings? Performance will also sell me a Fuji Cross Comp for $810, which is certainly a better buy, but it lacks disc tabs. I'd kill for a Lemond Poprad but the only one in my size locally is $1499 and I won't go that high.

Don't forget they've currently got a 10% off coupon, though I'm not sure if I could get the local shop to match that. It's so much cheaper than my other LBS', and this will be my commuter. I've already got a Madone. I can't splurge on this one.

who cares about the front derailleur? especially on a commuter... are either models' wheels disc compatible?

I'd say go for the elite model. I recently made the switch to SRAM Rival when I built up my Soma DoubleCross with disc Avid BB7 road brakes. The groupset shifts nicer (to me), the feel is more 'industrious" (meaning it doesn't feel like they would break when under hard shifting), the grips a way more comfortable (Shimano shifters is like holding a chicken neck because the grips on the hood is so skinny), and SRAM shifters can be disassembled and rebuilt (something Shimano shifters are virtually impossible to do). (No offense to all Shimano fans, they make GREAT products, just not for my tastes. I can't wait to try a bike with the new DA) As for the disc brakes, I live in Seattle (rain 3-5 days a week, recently a couple snow days), the brakes work flawlessly. It has great modulation and power. I would definitely get them if you're not looking to use the bike for racing under UCI regulations.

I work at performance, we haven't got the mongoose cross bikes in yet, but we did used to have their road bikes. It was a good quality build. I'd say it was one of the nicer quality bikes for their price range.

I'd say if you are looking to get disc brakes, get the frame with the disc brake tabs. Not that the Fuji is a bad bike (5 guys i work with have either the Fuji Cross Comp or Pro), get what you want if you're going to spend around a grand a a bike.

I have Ultegra on my Madone and I am quite happy with Shimano. I am not opposed to Rival , but $675 (after coupon code) for Tiagra is quite cheap and should be adequate.

If I could only get a Poprad disc for under a grand.....
