Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

New to Forum...question about Performance Bike Shop

Hello everyone. Great forums, love the site. I am a noob to road bikes/cyclocross. I am leaning toward the CX due to I live in AZ and the streets are not all that great plus i may do the light dirt trails.

My question is I found a Fuji Cross Comp at Performance Bikes. It is $999, but after reading a few post here on the Fuji Cross Comps people have bought them cheaper at Performance, in the 850 range.

Sooooo long story short, do they wheel and deal on bikes? Or are they pretty much what you see is what you get? I did not want to offend the sales guy by asking at that time because I told him I was shopping around.

Thanks again

Sean

I bought a 2008 Fuji Cross Comp at Performance originally for $899 (Oct '08), but the price went down briefly to $849, they gave me the difference back! The '09 seems to be costing more. It isn't as pretty as the '08 though. As to will they go lower? Not so sure. If you get the bike though, it is wonderful. It handles quite well, and zips down the road (ok, the RIDER has to help it along).

Oh, they have a Price Guarantee thing, so if you DO find it cheaper elsewhere, bring them proof, they will lower the price to that.

Thanks Mike. I did not want to be a ****** bag and start asking. Glad to see they will do a price match.

Agreed about the new color. Not sure if I am happy with it....BUT I am not in it completely for the "bling" factor.

They also had a full carbon Fuji roadie that I liked also in the same price range. Gonna give them a test spin soon.

No one else in Phoenix sells Fuji that I know of. So if you're sure that's the bike you want, you won't find it anywhere else. But there is a trick to getting the best price out of Performance. First, their prices change almost daily. Okay, maybe weekly. And, it seems like there is almost always a % off sale going on. Some days it's % off everything, other days it's % off on certain bikes.

Buy it if you're sure it's what you want, and get in the habit of stopping by the store. If they drop the price, they will refund the difference... if you know to ask for it.

I bought a road bike, but I almost wish I'd bought a cross bike for riding on the canals as well as the street.

Well, I wasn't really in it for the "bling" but it did match my helmet! I don't think the components are that different on it. Performance has been really good about repairs/maintenance too.

'09 prices on fuji bikes are up, thats part of the increase. If you're going to buy it soon, get the performance bike membership. You'll get emails for their sales, including % off coupons for online and/or in-store purchase. The bonus part is that you get 10% of the purchase price in "points" to spend at the store. $1000 fuji = $100 of free stuff, plus a subscription to bicycling magazine (meh). Don't forget to cancel it before it renews in a year, the fee is $25, unless you spend enough there to make it worthwhile.

--edit- my email today from performance is 10% off all bikes, in-store only, today through 3/22. Now might be a good time to purchase.

You can also ask if they have any '08's, '07's, etc. in inventory at other stores.

I work at Performance.
We pretty much have random deals all the time. I think we have a 30 or 90 day price guarantee, so if the price drops the next month, we'd give you the difference, unless the sales of both months were meant to happen at different times. Just be nice to the sales associate and they'll help you out. We get a lot of @-holes and d-bags, at lease here in the NW. You'd also get a free first tune-up and lifetime adjustments. Make sure you join Team Performance. It's not a ripoff if you buy a bike or if you are a biker, seriously. People often give us looks thinking it's just a ripoff to get more money from you: it's not. But if you do bike, and buy some bike stuff/bikes, get it. You won't regret it.

The Fuji Cross comp is a good deal. Decent groupset and a good aluminum frame. If you can find it for around 900, it's worth it.

Just so you know, Performance is a nationwide retailer. We do NOT bargain. Our prices are good and fair.
Also, if you are buying a couple things, as the cashier to check the online prices (performancebikes.com) on those things, we never hesitate to match our online prices (sometimes onlline sales is different from store sales).

I only have good things to say about the Performance in Scottsdale. The guys know bikes and are very helpful. Even the mechanics take time to give you repair advice.

Checked out Performance again over the weekend. I really liked the fuji cross but the 54" frame seemed to be way to big for me. It was the only one they had. They did not have one smaller, and would have to order it for me. I am 5'7" with a 29 inseem and a 52" roadie was still a little large. Great guys working at the Tucson store. What i liked about them best if that they did not know something they would find someone that did.

So still looking, but I am thinking a 50" CX would be more to my liking. I am going to be patient, I know the right bike is out there for me.

Well I did what I promised myself I would not do, but I bought a bike on ebay. I was just checking out the cyclocross section when I came across a low milage 2008 Trek XO2 for sale. The seller had done some parting out. He had changed it to an 8 speed cassette, Replaced the bontrager wheels with CXP's, took off the SRAM derailleurs and replaced with XTR's, and had put bar end shifter's on it.

The price was set at 500, and I placed a bid. No one else bid and I got the bike for 564 shipped. Not a bad deal in my eye's, and I feel like it really gives me an opportunity to do some upgrading of my own in the future without originally breaking the bank for a new bike.

I have a work friend that has a box full of parts (He's a hardcore roadie) that he says we can do some short term upgrades until I find what I like. Mainly going to get those bar end shifters off of there first. So that is it, I will post some pics when it arrives.

Sure will Cynikal. I will not receive the bike until next tuesday so it maybe a few weeks before I get back to you.

So I got the bike yesterday, and the downtube was tore up, as you can see in the pictures. Contacted seller who immediately called UPS. They are going to come take a look at it, then hopefully reimburse me my money. UPS is the suck! Box was tore to hell also. Huge holes in it...etc...

That sucks. Nothing taint the excitement of a new bike like shipping damage.

That being said, it doesn't look too bad and I doubt it will compromise the frame, but I would get it checked out.
