Can't find a Decent Steel Fork

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a nice 1" Steel fork with cantilever bosses. Best thing I can find is the Surly Cross fork, but that's 4130. I'd like a nice Tange prestige fork, but everyone seems to be out of stock of the 1 inch:

Any sources/ideas?

I'm tempted to get someone to make me one, as I really want a bi-planar:

The 1-inch steerer was the first thing you should have mentioned.

If you're willing to spend some money Waterford could help. They sell their forks separate. I don't think they'll do a bi-plane though. Where would you find the lugs to do it?

Vicious Cycles makes 1" steerer forks.

I have one on my 15 year old Litespeed mtn frame. Vicious makes a 26 wheel fork that is short enough to match the old geometry from when suspension forks only had 40mm of travel.

There's nothing wrong with 4130, it's just relatively heavy. I have an 853 frame and would like to put a nice, lighter than 4130 fork on it. Thanks for the tips guys.

I posted the link for the bi-planar crown in my original post, bikelugs.com carries them. I would just need someone to put it together for me, or learn how to braze and bend forks myself. I've tried brazing before, not so prettily, on some very heavy guage steel.

Check with http://www.desalvocycles.com/?p=steel_cx or one of the many other steel frame builders.

The lug on a biplane fork is a thing of beauty. It's a lot heavier than other fork designs though. A unicrown isn't as elegant but much lighter. Seems you want an elegant old school fork with modern light weight. As much as I detest CF that sounds like what you're looking for.

You might want to try a custom builder for your requirments. Be prepared to spend a lot of money.

The thing is, a nice steel fork is about 600-800 grams. A carbon fiber fork runs 300 to 600 grams, thus it's really not worth it, nevermind the principal. I'll find one on ebay if I wait long enough, I just thought someone might have a source.

What you might want to do is find an old seventies bike that came with a biplane fork. Even it it doesn't have canti mounts. It's a lot easier to have new mounts brazed on than to make a whole new fork. Probably more economical too. Good luck on the search.

Or try a UK frame builder. Some of them will built you a nice fork for 100 pounds.

Got one

These are listed at $300 on Hot tube's website, so I figure a $100 is cheap. Lots of 1 1/8" out there, very little 1". I almost just got rid of the frame for a 1 1/8" until I found this:
