Once the trails are frozen solid I ride my Major Jake on them with no problems. Last winter, I easily outclimbed my main riding partner/competitor on my MJ using city (non knobby) tires (he was on a mtb with studded tires). I paid for that on the descent as the trail was covered with packed snow.
I simply swap out the front wheel for one mounted with a studded tire for icy days on the commute. I leave the rear mounted with a city tire pretty much year round for both off/on road riding. The only time I run knobbies is when I race.
I don't know what kind temperatures you are talking about, but you might have to consider some of the tips on the winter biking site above for freewheel lube, etc if you experience major cold temps.
OVerall, I think as long as your tire choice is correct, you will find that the bike will do the same thing in the winter that it does in the summer (kick butt
