Cleaning sti

So how do you guys keep your shifters shifting smoothly? I have rival shifters and a few days of playing in the mud and dirt I notice the rinsing with water doesn't really cut it.

you can completely rebuild those. I would take a look at SRAM's tech articles and just take it apart and clean and lube as per their instructions

FWIW I have only done this once, and it is frustrating at first, but it will come together with some patience.

Use a hight viscocity lube, such as phil wood, when rebuilding these. It will resist washing away. Then occasionally lubricate them with tri flow on top of the phil. Works great.
