Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Shorter stems ok in CX? What handlebar has short reach too?

I think I may need a 70mm or 80mm stem for my CX bike since my reach is short. I'll have my 55cm 2001 Poprad next week and on my steel bikes I needed a short stem for a 56cm top tube and I think that's what the Lemond has.

Will this cause any adverse handling issues? Not sure if someone mentioned it'll feel more "lively".

If I went a frame size down to 53cm the 54cm top tube would allow me to use a longer stem but it would have to gain back 1-2cm in height and the seatpost would have about 8-9 inches in seatpost.

Also, along the same lines:

I was thinking of finding a wide 46 or so handlebar with a short reach and short distance to the drops. This would make the drops more comfortable for me. Any advice?

Best deal for short reach handlebar - FSA Omega Compact. Around $30. As for stems - Thompson has 70mm, and I've also used Vision (by FSA) - around $30 again for the Vision.

cx bikes tend to have slightly slower handling anyway due to increased trail relative to crit bikes.

I run 90mm stem on my bianchi with no issues or twitchiness

Where do you usually buy your parts? I'll search a little for these. I think it'd make a huge improvement in comfort.

It looks like most places sell up to 44cm bars. I'm thinking I'll just get one of those as that's 17 inches wide and should be enough. Most are OS as well so I'll have to buy a different stem, I have a good stem for 26 but not 31.8. Oh well
