Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Cross Conversion

I'm considering buying a Fantom Cross for grocery/commuter duty. Any harm in converting it to a 1x10 and using a flat bar? Suggestions, comments, and opinions are appreciated...

Why not just buy a flat bar road bike? Swapping everything on the Fantom will be expensive.
Or buy something like a Surly Karate Monkey?

I was thinking of doing some riding on fire roads plus I wanted the simplicity of the single derailleur...

The Fantom Cross comes standard as a 2x9 with Tiagra shifters. While I'm positive that you can convert it to a 1x10 setup, I must as why you want to do this. I would recommend a 1x9 setup as you will already have the chain and cassette ready to go. Of course this only applies if that cassette is the same ratio as you'd like to run. Another reason for a 1x9 is the shifter choices for flatbars. With a 9spd you can select from either the road or mountain flatbar shifters. With a 10spd, I think your options are limited with a barcon and Paul Thumbie being the best option IMO.

For me the choice would come down to whichever is cheaper. Obviously you're going to sell the Tiagra shifter, fd, dropbars for sure, and maybe the cassette and chain if going 10spd.

Yes, staying with 1x9 would be cheaper and more pragmatic with the Fantom CX unless I upgrade to the Windsor Cyclo, which looks an awful lot like the Fuji Cross Comp...
