I'm running a fixie with a conventional road front brake (Campag Avanti). Local conditions are filthy, farmtracks and snow, so unless I want to mothball my toy until Spring, I need to steal a trick from you 'cross folks.

I need a nice aggressive tyre - but skinny enough to work with a caliper brake. I figure if it clears the brake, it'll clear the forks and the back end. I'm thinking around the Hutchison Gold Cross, but none of my local shops carry 'cross kit, so I have to order sight unseen. Whatcha reckon? Any roadies who flirt with dirt care to comment?

For future reference, you might want to look at the Continental Twister. Nice tread pattern for snow and mud. I've been eyeing a pair of them at my LBS, thinking I'll put them on my 700C winter fixie.

Will these enable my stock trek 1000 to be able to be ridden on a surface other than paved road? I'd like to use it a little on dirt and gravel where a hybrid like the trek 7200 that has 35's with some tread pattern can go..

A cheap possiblity is Kenda Kwicks. They fit on my roadbike, and I think very under-rated. I've seen top riders use these in cross races as well, good for dirt roads and moderate mud- dont gob up with snow and mud. I use them as my "adventure tires" on the roadbike in winter- just point your bike toward farm country and go, you never know what you end up on.

Supergo in Mtn View, CA recently had these on closeout for about $17 each. What a steal as they retail for around $45. Only problem is they come in pretty large sizes (700x37). Probably wouldn't have enough clearance on a road bike that uses short reach brake calipers.
