Filling the gaps in my fleet with a cross bike.

Filling the gaps in my fleet with a cross bike.

I have a road race bike that I use for club rides and races, a short-travel FS mountain bike that I use for general trail riding and some endurance MTB racing, and an old fully rigid mountain bike that is currently my commuter/ loaner MTB when friends visit from out of town and want to check out the local trails.

I have found myself wishing I had a second extra bike for trail riding with friends from out of town. I wouldn’t mind having a winter training bike with disk brakes so the deicing cinders on the road don’t grind the rims off of my race bike. Also, I’ve got a 9-mile each way commute to work that involves about a mile of gravel road and it would be great to take some time off of my commute with a faster bike. Although cross racing is not my thing right now, I may end up doing some cross races and have already done Roubaix-style races. I also can imagine that I could one day get a wild hair to take a few weeks off and do ride across a couple states. Because this won’t be a serious racing bike, I think Tiagra components would work just fine, and I don’t want to spend much more than $1000. I’m looking for a single bike that, with a few extra sets of tires, can serve as a sort of Swiss army knife of a bike and fulfill all of these rolls.

At first, I was looking at the Novara buzz: but it seems heavy (feels more like my mountain bike than my road bike) and the Alloy fork might get a little harsh on long rides.

Now, I think I’m leaning toward one of these:
I think the steel frame would offer some added comfort, and it is noticeably lighter than the Buzz when I lift it up.

Any other suggestions for similar cross bikes with disk brakes?
