Great deal or what?
I am new to cycling, but would like to purchase a bike that will work both for Cyclocross and Touring. I have come across a cyclocross bike for $800 that has been raced one season and used as a commuter for a couple years. The specs are as follows:
XRL Cross Frame - 54cm aluminum
SL3 Cross Fork (carbon)
Ritchey WCS OS handlebar (my favorite handlebar)
Dura Ace 7700 STI Levers
Cane Creek Crosstop Levers
FSA Integrated Headset with Cable Stop
Cantilever Brakes (newish pads)
Mavic Cosmos Wheels
Dura Ace 7700 Rear Derailleur
Ultegra 6600 front derailleur

I had contemplated building my own bike (to save money) or purchasing a new one with Shimano 105 components for about $900. With these options what looks the best????

Just my preference, but if I'm talking a difference of only $100, I'm always going to go with the new bike. Sure, the used one has [used] DA/Ultegra components, but 105 is also very nice. Do you know if it is a 105 5600 or 5700 bike? I would not have as much confidence with a bike that has been through a cyclo season as I would with a brand new one.

$800 is too much for that imo. You can get an XRL frame and fork new for like $200.

Yeah, that's too much for a bike like that. I'm not terribly excited about the Performance bike either though. I'd say save up for a couple of months and get something in the $1200-$1400 range. You'll probably get a much nicer bike.

The thing that jumps out at me is that the Dura-Ace parts are 7700. Those are old parts. Shimano rolled out the 7900 stuff last year, I think. 7700 is probably at least six years old. I wouldn't be shocked if the newest 105 stuff is nicer. The Ultegra 6600 FD (also not the latest model) is a fairly insignificant part.
