Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Specialized Crossroads conversion?

I found an early 90's Specialized Crossroads that I can get for $50 (seen here http://www.usedregina.com/ReportSele...osition=1&hb=1)
It has a chromoly frame and canti brakes but the wheels are a bit wide for a 700C. It has 700Cx38's on it now and I was planning on some 35's. Are rim widths an issue?
Before I buy this thing and begin my conversion could I actually ride this in an event or is it to heavy and out of date? I'm not a cat1 racer or anything like that since I just started club riding this year.
I just want to keep riding with the club now that the road season is over and they are all on cross bikes now. Thye race twice a week and I'd like to participate.

It'll be heavy, but it's better than not racing. I'd expect it to weigh in around 30 pounds. You might be able to lighten it by a few pounds with judicious spending.

I doubt you'd have problems running 700x35 tires on that, but you might want to measure the rims when you go to look at it. As a point of reference, my Salsa Delgado Cross rims are about 22.5 mm wide on the outside, and I've used 700x28's on there (though not for CX). I'd guess that being a pre-29er era bike the rims on that aren't that wide.

Most local cross races are run what ya brung. The bike will be fine as long as it's in decent repair. Don't worry about it being out of date, it's all about the motor.

Well I bought it. I want get some smaller cross tires, a cartridge BB and some bar end shifters. Has anyone ever kept the funky Shimano paddle shifters with a drop bar?
I've got a new seat from my Sherpa that should do nicely and the rack and kick stand will have to go. This should be a fun project.

I single speeded mine. I'm going to rebuild it with drop bars and an Alivio 8 speed groupo.
