Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

top tube too high?

This bike has a standover height 1.929 inches (4.9) cm from my pubic bone. That's almost a full inch more than the 1 inch that Rivendell says the consumer products safety commission requires http://www.rivbike.com/article/bike_...g_a_frame_size.

Would I be safer with a lower top tube or does it really matter that much?

I'm male.

I'd say two inches is plenty. I can't promise you'll never hit it, but I think that's about what I have.
