Compare the geometries. It may or may not be true. Even brands are going to be different. I ride a 54cm road bike. I have a 56cm Specialized Tricross and a 54cm Airborne Carpe Diem (both cross bikes) and they are very similar in geometry and fit. I tried a 54cm Tricross and it was very compact. Too compact for my liking.

Cross bikes can be all over the boards if you go by frame size. A 51cm Cannondale is relatively close to my 54cm fuji. Pay attention to top tube length and standover and fit yourself to that.

Sizing can be all over the place, many CX builders believe that your bottom bracket should be higher for better clearance on trails. Independent Fabrication generally have high BBs and thus their seat tubes are quite short so you can still have some standover. My IF cross frame has a 57.5cm top tube and a 54cm seat tube. On the other hand some builders like a tradition road 7cm drop for their BB, thus their seat tubes are generally longer, and their sizing looks much more like a traditional road frame. That said, I assume you are asking about the length of your top tube. Many people run their top tubes a bit shorter so they can be a bit more upright on CX races (or even rides). You may want to consider a TT 1-2 cm shorter (I do, my road frames are 59-60 ideally) but I'd say test ride the frame before you make any decisions.

Frame size was NOT reduced from my normal size when I bought my last 2 cross bikes - both 56cm Tricross. At 5'10", the 54cm was too tight and cramped, even though the general assumption for cross is one size down.
As Cynical and knobster indicated, it depends... much on the brand and what feels right.

My road bike and my CX bike have almost identical top tubes. However, my road bike has a 6 degree 110mm stem angled down, and my CX bike has a a 10 deg 100mm stem angled up.
