Depends what's available to you but I have a Campy Centaur and it works fine on my 48T.

I use Shimano Dura Ace. Works fine. My smallest outher chainring is 47.
Your inner chainring is still at least 38.
The only problem is estetic. It looks better when the curve of the derailleur follows your chainring.

I have a campag Chorus and works fine with a 48/39 combo
Prerace, I use a misplaced faith in my innate ability, with a dose of needless optimism. For recovery, I use self-delusional techniques.
