    2011 Giant TCX 1 vs. 2011 Kona Jake The Snake Please

    Hello all,

    I think I've finally narrowed down my choices. However, there is no bike shop within a 100 mile radius that has one of these for me to test ride. I'll have to purchase the bike if they special order it.

    Please help me decide which bike is better for the money...

    2011 TCX 1
    or
    2011 Jake The Snake

    The 2012s are coming too.

    Ok, does this mean your previous thread is no longer valid?

    I like the 2012 Jake/JTS better than 2011. It looks like they both have rack/fender eyelets again, from what I can see in the pic. The 2012 color schemes are WAY better, IMHO. It doesn't have geometry, or full specs, yet though. I liked the 2010s too (I have a 2010 Jake), but 2011 models I never warmed to.

    No idea about the Giant.

    I was looking at the same bikes this sping (also the Specialized TriCross Comp) and finally went with the Neuvation FCX 100.

    1100 miles later I still love my bike.

    No regrets.

    Thanks. I found a JTS in stock at a shop today. Gonna go check it out.

    2010 Jake had a Steel fork. 2011 Jake had (I believe) an aluminum fork. Not sure about 2012, and also not sure about the JTS.

    I'm learning as I go.

    Just comparing the 2011s, looks like the TCX 1 specs out better than the JTS.

    SRAM Rivals, that's good, no?

    BTW, I got to ride a JTS today. Felt real nice.

    I ended up buying a TCX Rabobank. Basically the same frame with 105 build and painted in Team colours. I also test rode a JTS and I liked the handling of the TCX a bit better. I test rode a 2010. FWIW the 2011 had a more aggressive geometry, which I think I would have liked better.

    One thing I don't like about the TCX and would prefer about the JTS is the JTS has two water bottle mounts and my TCX only has one. The 2012 JTS also appears to have brought back the rack mounts.

    I would like to put fenders and a rack on my bike and it would be easier with the mounts.

    If you're not interested in the versatility, then I'd say I've been very happy with how the TCX rides. I've used it for Fondos with Michelin Pro Race 3 tires, but also ride light trails that my friends ride on their hardtails. But I emphasize light trails, you're not going to be doing any mountain biking on a cross bike.

    I forgot to answer your other question. SRAM Rival is supposed to be quite good. I think it's about par with 105, but I'm not positive about that.

    One thing I noticed about the 2012 JTS is that it has cross gearing, meaning the chainrings are 46/36. Not sure how you intend to use the bike, but the Giant comes with gearing more suited to the road with a 50/34. Not sure if the gearing makes a difference to you, but if you plan on riding on the road a reasonable amount I'd advise getting a 50/34. The shop might be willing to swap it at no charge before you purchase. I guess it also depends on the terrain where you live.
