I almost feel over my head (I am not at all familiar with Campy's different product lines). but I think it's what I want so I thougt I'd ask for some help. I'm mostly trying to figure out the shifter options right now. I know I want a 9 speed but other than that I get lost in in all the options and I'm not even sure which one will and won't work.

Another requirement is alloy (not carbon or carbon covered) levers. Budget wise I want somethig nice but not not over the top. If a non-current production model is recommended or if the savings is worth it I have no problem going to eBay. I could also use some advise regarding specific things to stay away from.

As far as current offerings are concerned, 11 speed Campy will work with 9 speed Shimano. The only non-carbon 11 speed levers are Athena. Otherwise, you could get either of the 10 speed levers (Centaur or Veloce) with a Shiftmate. Ribble has the cheapest pricing that I'm aware of for the different levers.

if by Shimergo...you mean combining the two, you can get a 10speed campy ergo and match it up with a 9 speed shimano cassette/rear derailleur.
The cable pull is pretty close. You might have to fiddle with how you clamp down the cable. I did this on my CX build. It worked great.
You can also go the jtekengineering route with their pulley system to get it more precise.
I bought some pretty nice century grey centaur ergos on ebay for $150.

I forgot to mention.. I've also got a 9 speed ergo to work with a shimano 9 speed derailleur/cassette. It worked great for as long as I was using it. Unfortunately, I switched it out before I could have a true long term test.

Thanks to both of you for the input. I'm not a dumb guy (most of the time) but I've tried to get my head around this a couple of times. Let's assume I don't want to use a Shiftmate for now (I have a mimimalistic attitude), they are slightly spendy and I'd rather use the $$ for a setup more to my preference if that's what it takes.

As jmckk pointed out it looks like the Campy 11s is the only shifter option I have w/ a 9s Shimano cassette, correct? If so does this take into account the hubbub option when used with a Shimano RD? The problem with this option is that the Campy 11s gear is still getting good money on the used market and I'm even more limited by my preference for alloy levers.

Bluenote mentioned the 9s Campy shifters w/ the right cassette but I'm not experienced enough to detect long term problems associated with this setup if it doesn't turn out to be ideal.

In trying to answer my own questions I think I figured out a combo I like (and one that most importantly will work and that I don't mind paying for). Sanity check please...

Campagnolo 10 speed shifters will work with a Shimano rear derailleur with the Hubbub mod on a 9 speed Shimano cassette. Therefore I can buy these shifters:

to work with a Shimano Dura-Ace RD-7800.

The only assumption here is the the RD-7800 is "Hubbubable" Any input on this?

Like I mentioned earlier I'm not overly familiar with Campy's product line up (past or present) so can someone let me know if there might be a better 10 speed option than the Chorus. I know bidding isn't over on them but a look at completed auctions on similar levers show the carbon versions going for about $150. I can afford that and these levers are alloy, which I prefer, but I would think the carbon version would be more in demand.

Did I finally figure this out?

The only other thing I would have liked to accomplish would be using a Campy rear D instead of Shimano but I don't think that is going to happen w/ a setup that has a 9 speed Shimano cassette. It was a low priority anyway and the DA stuff is solid.

I'm currently using a campy chorus 10 speed shifter with a 9 speed internal ratchet( don't ask, they came that way when purchased off eBay) to run an xtr derailleur on an 8 speed shimano cassette. Shifts flawlessly without the hubjub cable arrangement. Just set up as normal. I may eventually change out that ratchet back to 10 speed and use 9 speed cassettes, and expect it will run just as well.
