Junior 10-12 y/o CX Racing Bikes
I've googled this topic until the cows came home. I've watched the juniors wrestling heavy mtb bikes. We have a Fuji Ace 24". We checked out the Novara 26" bike. Both of these bikes are heavy. The Fuji only allows a 24"x1" tire. We could put treaded tires on it and it might work. The only solution I've been somewhat satisfied with is a 24" bmx crusier. The problem with this bike is a) single speed, and b) only a rear brake. Maybe the single speed is not a problem - my son usually spins like mad. If the bmx cruiser would work then we could also use it at the bmx track. Would the USAC officials allow a bmx cruiser in a junior race? Can I get some opinions and advice? Much appreciation to be had. Thanks.

Redline and Kona both make 24" versions of the CX bikes. They aren't cheap, but light bikes never are.

Consider a good quality Trek Singletrack from 1993-1999. These fully rigid framesets use True Temper chromoly, triple-butted tubing and can converted to drop bars.

Ridley also make most of their frames in 44cm. There are also a few European manufacturers making purpose-built kids cross bikes, Scatto and Islabikes come to mind.

I just picked the kid up a Kona Jake 24. Absolutely beautiful. I mean, really a nice bike.
That said, its not (how can I say this kindly) the lightest thing ever. I am working my way through it to dump some lbs., but it will take some doing.
I pulled the cheap steel(?) chainrings for a 1x9 setup. Yanked off the left shifter for a compact Cane Creek unit. The BB appears to be made out of lead or something, so that's next. Going to toss an old Ti railed saddle on it as well. The wheels could use some work too, but that's for later.
Still no sure if it will break 20.
Redline also makes a VERY nice 24" unit as well, although I think the component spec is one down from the Kona.

Yeah, you have to move up to a SuperX or such to get it light. The one I just got is 16 lbs. I think that's a big advantage for the small kids that are racing on them.
