Shoes in the fridge

If anyone has watched Jeremy Powers show behind the Barrier, does anyone know why he put his shoes in the fridge before races?

I'm not sure why JPow does it, but I think you can put your shoes in the freezer as a method to prevent them from getting funky. The cold inhibits the bacteria...I think.

I guess zapping them in the microwave wouldn't do anything?
