Felt 35x - Any Issues
I've been looking for a commuter bike to supplement my Trek Soho S. My commute takes me on some poorly maintained blacktop trails, bad streets, etc. The Soho does great, but a few gears for the hills would be a big help. I like the secondary brakes that come stock on these cyclecross bikes. Not sure if I care one way or the other about the canti brakes. As long as they stop the bike and my 183 lbs., that's good enough for me. I'm not looking to get one for racing, just a solid commuter that I can put some fenders on.
Anyway, I recently took a test ride on a "new" 53cm Felt 35x near my workplace. It shifted nice with those Shimano 105's and it passes the eye-test for me. I went home and discovered that this was a 2009 model. Question: Were there any issues with this bike? The LBS said that this is a leftover, but I'm surprised that it is still there from 2009. I'm sure I can get a deal on it (they are discontinuing being a Felt dealer), but I want to be sure that there is nothing "wrong" with this model.
Felt makes a solid bike. I'm not familiar with this model-year but their other cross bikes are great. 105 components, 32 spoke wheels and cross tires will make for a great workhorse bike. If you want other options you might want to also look at Specialized Tricross: another great freeroad-oriented cross bike but with fender and rack mounts built into the frame which might be more useful as a commuter.
Personally, if I got a good price on that Felt, I would get just that.
Oh yeah, I also wouldn't worry about it being a leftover. Cyclocross bikes are a niche category that most people don't even consider. They don't sell in the volumes that road, MTB and even townie cruisers sell at.
Ok. This is a smaller LBS that has been around since '73 and it appears that they focus more on repairs than sales. They carry a mash-up of bikes (Kona, Surly, Marin, etc.), versus the Trek-only and Specialized-only dealers that are near my home in the suburb. This Felt looked and rode good (my top-2 wants), but it just seemed odd that it was sitting there. And, from what I can tell, Felt only carried this model in '09. But, hey, a deal is hard to pass-up!
