Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Crankset recommendation?

Hey guys,

I've been busy/lazy for the past year or so and have only been riding around recreationally, etc. I have a 2010 Ridley with SRAM Rival shifting and a FSA Gossemer crankset. Its always shifted like pure crap (not saying its not my fault setupwise, but i've rarely had trouble in the past) and now its getting noisy and creaky. Good enough reasons for a new one.

My budget is $230 max. What options do i have a for a decent 36/46 crankset? I see Shimano now has CX stuff, the CX70 looks nice. Is it worth $230? Can you get a 105 in 36/46? How are the SRAM offerings?

I'm hoping to get in shape and do some more cross racing this fall, woot!

I use the CX50 (not hollow) version: https://www.jensonusa.com/Bicycle-Dri...cross-Crankset

Same performance, but heavier (and only $100).

That sounds like the smart choice, but i'm hoping to drop some weight with this upgrade.

CX70 vs. Rival?

What are the race circuits like where you live and compete ?

NB: Cyclocrossworld.com sells 105 cranks like that, But,
they also sell the 53 39t chainrings that they took off the stock
out of the box cranksets.
to have the Cross geared set they do sell ..

want 46, 36t , IE compact double?, do that, then
get the chainrings you choose, and have the 34, 50t as take offs..

will 130bcd OK? looks like there is a 46 38 sold, out of the box,
in Sram's Rival right up there in budget limit, and Apex stuff
that, a few bucks less, would be best price.

I'm in New England. So rocky, dirty, grassy, rooty with chances of mud and snow. Mostly dirt and grass i'd say.

Am i crazy or did there used to be a wheels/tires and a components subsection on these forums? I haven't been on in a year or so

+1, unless you have a BB30 bottom bracket. Then you have to go Force.
