Road tires on your CX bike

What tires or wheel set do you have?

I am new to CX and got these for my Redline Conquest:
Continental Gatorskin Wire Bead Road Bike Tire 700 x 28

Didn't get a real ride in yet but reviews say they are tough as nails.

Do any of you get a different wheel set completely?

The Continental Gatorskin in a 700 x 28 is a good all-around tire for road or perfectly smooth trails. These tires are flat resistant, roll reasonably well and are durable.

You can use almost any 700c tire on a cyclocross bike, I've used the following;

700x38 Schwalbe Marathon Cross
700x38 Vittoria Randonneur Hyper (AKA Voyager Hyper)
700x35 Schwalbe Marathon Winter
700x32 Vittoria Randonneur Hyper (AKA Voyager Hyper)
700x32 Kenda Happy Medium
700x28 Conti Gatorskin
700x28 Vittoria Rubino Tech
700x27 Challange Parigi-Roubaix
700x25 Conti Gatorskin
700x23 Conti Gatorskin

My current favorite is the 700x32 Vittoria Randonneur Hyper. As fast as a 700x25 training tire, covers dry gravel and trails as well as a file tread CX tire. Flat resistant, tough and durable.

I looked those up and noticed the recommended PSI is 60-70 PSI. Why are the Continentals so different (95-120 PSI)?

32mm vs 28mm tire size, for one. Narrow tires require higher pressures. Other than that, it's manufacturer's suggestions based on performance depending on things like TPI of the casing and pliability of the sidewalls. I've got 32mm Panaracer Urban Max tires on my commuter and I huff 'em up to 85psi. I have 32mm IRD Crossfires on my CX rig and I ran those things as low as 33 - 35psi for racing even though the minimum suggested is 45psi.

You may have been looking at the Vittoria Randonneur, which is a 30TPI, wire bead tire. The Vittoria Hyper is a 120TPI, folding tire. The Hyper has a 45-90 PSI inflation range printed on the sidewall. I also need to update the model name to Voyager Hyper in 2013, the tire was called the Randonneur Hyper in 2012. Same tire, new name.

I'm 200Lbs and I keep inflation at 80 & 90psi with ideal results.

roll nicely, just wont be bombproof like heavier tires with the substantial added flat barriers..
(which may be what you want, using, as many do, your 'cross' bike as a Commuter)

I've heard great things about the Jack Browns.

I will probably get some 35mm Resist Nomads (measure closer to 32) when I have some spare dollars kicking around to put on a cross bike for the off season.

I have 35mm Panaracer T-Servs on my commuter and really like them. So far no flats and they actually have some suppleness to them.

Whatever wheelsets I have around for the road bike; since CX season is over around here, I just switched my XO1 to road duty. That meant installing a bottle cage, putting on fenders, and grabbing a set of road wheels. Oh, and changing the pedals out and moving the seatpost back up.

I much prefer taking the 'cross bike out on wet/dirty days as it's far easier to wipe down after a ride than a regular road bike, and mine is not much heavier than the road bikes so there's really no slowdown at all.

I luv my 700 28 gatorskins.
Got my Maxxis Locust 700 34 right now for my wet/winter setup.
When the snow decides to make an appearance for a day or 2,I pull out my 29er.

I'm running Forte Metro K 700c x 35 on my CX commuter and they are great. Good combination of ride, flat protection and low price. Currently on sale at Performance for $15.

I used to have two wheel sets so I could swap CX and road tires easily. I finally ended up getting a second (and then a third) CX bike. Now one is purely for CX (which currently has 700x33 Clement PDX Crusades), one is purely for commuting (which currently has 700x35 Schwalbe Marathon Supremes) and one might be used on or off road and so has two wheel sets with 700x25 Maxxis Re-Fuses on the road wheels and 700x30 Michelin Mud2's on the CX wheels.

I've also used 700x28 Conti GP 4 Seasons in the past, which are more expensive than the GatorSkins but worth it in my opinion. The GatorSkins are good tires though.

I'm not a big fan of colored tires. It seems to me that anything will become road-colored or thereabouts in a short number of rides.

That said, if someone made me get a colored tire, I'd go with the Conti Grand Prix 4000.

I found the Jack Brown Greens to be a nice supple ride, but total flat magnets. I should probably give the Jack Brown Blues a chance, but I like the 28mm Ruffy Tuffy tires (which feel faster and can take a great deal of abuse without being too stiff) so much I can never convince myself to try something else.

I like my Vittoria Randonneur Pros in 32mm on my Kona Jake. I also have used a set of 25mm Performance brand tires (Strada K, I think). They work well too, but I prefer the ride of the 32mm Rando Pros.

I have a Panaracer T-serv which is all red that I'm unhappy with - the rubber surface became sort of slick quickly and doesn't grip safely. I had to use it as a trainer tire after barely a few hundred miles.

It's actually pretty fun switching out tires on cx bike, you have so many options. I just need another wheelset

I just used Vittoria pressure calculator iTire Pressure Vittoria and I was surprised with the results.
With all numbers the same but TPI rating, 120 TPI tires needed 10 psi MORE than 60 TPI tires...
After reading many comments on BF, I thought that it should be opposite... Is Vittoria calculator off, or just some members mixed up the facts?

Vittoria is correct. I high tpi tire has more threads per inch but less rubber. The threads are supple while the rubber stiffens the tire. More air pressure is needed in a tire with stiffer construction than a tire with supple construction. 10 psi sound about right to me.
