Commuting on my cross bike has resulted in dying hubs and worn out sidewalls. I plan to get a disc brake commute bike to overcome part of that issue and free up my cx bike for cx. But now I need wheels.

I am an economically minded person - cheap, by necessity. 2 kids in college and all that. Any advice? I can get a shimano 105 hub, 32 spoke, velocity 23's for about $200. Good wheels? Or should I do something else? I sure like the price, weight is no bother till I lose about 50#.

The 105 hubs and A23 rims are both great, but if those are the Handspun wheels I think they have straight gauge spokes. That's not awful, I guess, but it would be the weak spot in the wheelset. You may not be able to find better wheels for that price.

Thought 105, being a roadie component, doesn't have disc mounts, the equivalent hub from the
hybrid sector uses an MTB hub, 700c rim.

Drop by the LBS and see what they can get for $100 a wheel. dont be too brand focused,
since the bottom line is as you say, economically dictated..

I see some well sealed rubber boot protected hubs on $400 bikes.
the shop should, if prompted, adjust the Hubs, add more grease, hand tension and true
the machine built wheels, and perhaps even offer a re truing in a month or 2..
