Hi guys, please help me with this setup I'm getting to my new bike:

Shifters are 105 road (5700) and crankset is Sram apex 50-34

after some research, I noticed that this last RD won't work because the dyna-sys won't work with the 105 STIs.

I couldn't find anything related to that cassette working with that hub, but I read somewhere (probably in S. Brown's) that some road hub would not fit perfectly a mtb cassette, or I didn't understand it correctly.

The main question is. Will these parts work together?

The freehub driver part of the hub should be common to Both as long as the "speeds" count is = /..

A 'shadow' rear derailleur can give you problems with road shifters because it doesn't have a barrel adjuster built in. If you have barrel adjusters on the downtube that isn't a problem, but if you don't you'll need something inline, which is less than ideal.

Otherwise you should be fine.

fietsbob, It's because I read somewhere (can't remember where) that road hubs would fit mtb cassettes with adapter in certain cases.

Andy, thanks for that clearance. Honestly I didn't think about it, and thats definitely a problem. I didn't receive the frameset yet, but I don't think it's gonna have an adjuster.

Do you think its better to get an older deore?? An inline adjuster would be that bad?

I've had no issues with inline adjusters and they can be nice because you can adjust them while riding. They do add one more variable into the whole cable routing equation, but it's workable.

Some inline adjusters are better than others. I've had some that were tough to turn with one hand once they were under tension. I like the Jagwire model that goes flush against the side of the shifter, but of course that won't work with 5700 shifters.

A Deore M591 rear dereailleur (the non-shadow model) avoids the problem.

hmmm. i think it will be m591 or maybe a new alivio. I just have to check if they support 36t on crankset.

The Deore RD will work just fine, all recent Shimano rear derailleurs are compatible except for the new 10 speed mountain components (dynasys). The particular Deore mech you linked seems to support 36 cassettes. As for cassettes not fitting on certain hubs, there were some Dura Ace models which had deeper splines to engage an aluminium freehub body, but this clearly isn't the case.

The Freehub splits in 2 . driver has 1axle bearing race, freewheel pawls
[all those tiny bearings in side] , and the splined external sleeve
the cassettes slide over , secured by the lockring.

there is a sleeve bolt inside joining it to the aluminum part that has the spokes in it ,
and the left axle bearing.

the actual freehub driver has some variations , but a 9 speed cassette will slide on a 9 speed
freehub driver , pretty interchangeably road or Mountain..

.. thats the rest of the kit, .. not the Actual Driver part of the Freehub.
