insomuch as my gravel grinders are outfitted and used for overnight and touring trips.....

Trek 520 circa 2007, Surly TravelersCheck circa 2010,

Origin8 CX700 circa 2013 (wouldn't ride this in a gravelgrinder race, but my go-to recreational gravelgrinder - sandsled bike of the moment.) My one bit of advice, from having done this for a while, is - Forget the "which knobby tire is ideal" dilemma. Simply choose fat, street oriented tires. I've been very happy with the performance of even straight street slicks on dirt - the 32c Bontrager Racelite slicks on gravel are very fast, very flat resistant, and suitable for finepack gravel, a little outgunned on washboard.

That was pretty much my conclusion. I went with 40mm Schwalbe Marathon Extremes for Dirty Kanza. They have some tread, but a pretty much continuous center bead so they roll fairly well.

I had a little bit of an issue with the rear tire slipping on some short very steep, loose patches climbing while standing, but that was manageable.

And the tires appear to be bulletproof. No issues over 225 miles, while I watched maybe 50 people fixing flats.

As far as tires go, using the Clement LAS on the Schwinn right now, the tight diamond pattern gives just a little bite in the loose surface dust. The new rig is going to be running Conti TravelContact tires, wide smooth center with some good teeth on the edges.

This is my 2012 Pedal Force CX2 with 700x32 Vittoria Hyper tires and a 30 speed drivetain;



This is the 2010 Origin 8 CX700. I'll use 700x50 Schwalbe Supreme, 700x47 Schwalbe Smart Sam, 700x35 Schwalbe Winters and other tires. 27 speed Deore drivetrain with a 48, 36 & 22 chainring set.



And my 2008ish Soma Double Cross with 700x40 Vittoria Hyper tires and a 30 speed drivetain.

I picked up a Specialized Crux last Summer for cross season. After cross season when wet weather picked up I put back on the original tires and used it for a wet weather commuter. Last month I slapped on a set of knobby Kenda tires and out on the gravel I go. My road bike is getting very lonely in the garage.

It definitely can take a road crank (complete bikes ship with a 34/50 Tiagra).

Gaps in sizing isn't as bad as it seems at first look. With the higher bars, the 55cm fits me perfectly where my custom Kirk is a 58x56cm
