Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

solid CX bike for $2500 e/ disc brakes???

Looking for a CX bike to take on some back mt roads and maybe a few races per yr. I did the Rapha Race on my super6 w/ 25c now hooked I don't want to beat up my supersix on those back road adventures plus limited on size of tires I can run. I'm thinking disc brakes would be cool to have, similar modulation I might have from my MTBs. Plus hated the cable shutter I had from a cheaper Origin8 frameset number of yrs ago.

Budget is around $2500 for complete or built up, cheaper the better if complete cuz I can upgrade the crappy wheels from the start. I still have the take off 105's shifters and D's from my super6 laying around.

On the radar and still waiting for some shops to even get the new 2014 bikes

Felt FX5 - rival - carbon!
Focus AX 1.0 - hydro rival
Crux either complete of E5 frameset
Niner RLT
Salsa warbird (can get frameset for $900)
Kona Jake the snake build up (frameset is $600)

any thoughts? Opinions?

$2500 ought to get you a really rice bike.

The Warbird might be the way to go (because of the extra tire clearance) if you plan to do general adventure mountain biking type stuff. If you've already got 105 shifters that will help keep it under budget.

Mechanical disc brakes don't really approximate hydraulic MTB brakes very well. I'm using TRP HY/RD's on my 2013 Jake commuter. In warm weather they were better than any purely mechanical discs I've used. I'm having an issue now that it's cold, but I'm pretty sure it's just a problem with air in the hydraulic chamber. (I'm picking up a bleed kit this weekend.)

The Snake is a nice frame and has support for fenders and racks if you think you might ever put this bike to utility use.

I think that is my big debate.....stock carbon felt and upgrade slowly or build a blinged out alum bike like the JTS, warbird or rlt (Jan release)

ended up ordering a Fuji Altamira CX1.3. Full SRAM force, 160/140mm bb7 brakes, Tapered fork with Oval cockpit & wheels. Should be a solid ride to take around everywhere and stayed under budget for a change + get $210 back in Performance Bucks w/ the purchase

Problem is not many stock CX bikes in socal. If they do, they are lower end and not what I'm looking for?

Driving my FJ from San Diego to Oregon will be allot more then the $180 i had to pay in taxes for the Fuji isn't worth it...well for a bike purchase that is. The trip up would be an awesome drive along big sur and through all the redwood on the north end of the state.

Hope this will be here mid next week

Looks like you weren't kidding when you declared you would go back up those roads in a second if you had the chance:-)

Ha ha yup! Having the right tool for the job. This fits the void I have between my super6 and 29er hardtail singlespeed.

Yeah that's nice looking, for a Fuji.

Performance sells nice stuff at good values if you don't mind the brand names. I got my road bike there (a GT).

Heres the Deal: the Shop owner stocks what sells .. if it does not sell its money not making any profit ,
to pay the bills.

In that case ..with your Voice ..you say "I'm liking your shop, (state personal reason)
but What Im looking for is a high end CX bike "

Because (I want the better Ultegra Group, etc.) , and I have $2500 burning a hole in my pocket .

What do you have available .. thru your distributors?

Out here , every one Is coming here with their touring equipment , Its a destination , west bound

or mid point , southbound, so the shops dont carry hardly any.. nothing Posh ..

Here , we have Breweries
