I spoke with Steve Hed recently about this bike at our local swap in Blaine.
It may well be the right choice for me, as I love the versatility built into the frameset.
...and a choice of HEDs in the price sounds very tempting.

That thing is all kinds of overkill, but I guess you don't come to the NAHBS with a purely practical bike.

Looks like a fine distance gravel ride to me. Couple that with a new set of Ardennes + and a decent rider would be good to go.
HED has a very good pulse on gravel races like Almanzo and the DK200.

Very nice bike, especially if tires larger than 700x38 are an advantage in use.

What I meant is, for instance, what does a gravel bike need with thru axles? Does it make it better? I suppose so. Is it necessary? Not on any gravel roads I've ridden.
But, yeah, it looks like a great bike.

Personally not thrilled with the appearance on the welds... the brake mounts are a little hideous.

I saw the bike at NAHBS and it was a love/dislike kind of feeling. I loved the fork crown, reminiscent of a vintage bike. Also liked the through axle especially with disk brakes. Paint on the root beer colour bike was quite nice. Not thrilled with the way the seat stays are shaped in order to clear the chain stay mounted calipers. I would have moved the caliper to the seat stay, or do what everyone else does and use a longer dropout with disk tabs. Like Sixty Fiver, I thought the brake posts and welds were certainly not up to the standards that I typically see at NAHBS. 650b rims were very nice and the Hetres looked good on that bike. Glad to see HED making 650b rims. They certainly make good rims.

Perhaps a raw look to the welds was what was desired... the Taylor Brothers never touched up their work but their filet brazing was pretty flawless.
For a bike that has such a nice flow to it's lines and such a nice look the brake mount really jumps out... this is not a criticism of how well it functions but just an aesthetic observation.
